Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI)

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) performs digital radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the head, neck, spine, chest and body. Exams are performed with and without use of contrast materials to achieve diagnostic studies for proper diagnosis and treatment. Candidates may qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation, applicable only to current VHA employees who meet the criteria. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification : All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or mammography duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, technologists without advanced certification may receive on‑the‑job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education : Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months or the equivalent in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or another accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education. Credentialing Standards : Public Law 97-35 and 42 CFR Part 75 require that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet credentialing standards. Applicants must have successfully completed an educational program that meets these standards and be certified as radiographers in their field. Grade Determinations : Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS‑9. Experience : At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position and demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques, and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre‑procedural, procedural, and post‑procedural care of patients. Preferred Experience At least one year of full‑time experience performing a wide variety of routine and complex MRI examinations in a hospital or outpatient setting. Demonstrated ability to independently perform and prioritize routine and complex MRI examinations (e.g., brain, spine, MSK, body, MRA/MRV) while maintaining high image quality, adherence to safety standards, and efficient workflow management to support timely and accurate patient care. Requirements may include standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that require normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
