HVAC Service Technician Lead

Position Type: Full-time. hourly position eligible for overtime

Compensation: $38 - $53 per hour + potential for additional $280 per week in incentives

Job Summary:

The HVAC Service Technician Lead is responsible for overseeing troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting HVAC issues, diagnosing complex system problems, and providing solutions to ensure customers' systems operate efficiently. In addition to service work, the role also involves selling HVAC replacement systems and performing start-up commissioning on newly installed HVAC units. This role is also expected to assist the Service Manager with training new hires and coaching peers on best business practices as well as proper diagnosis and resolution of service issues.

1. Troubleshoot and Repair:
   1. Diagnose and repair heating, cooling, and ventilation issues in residential HVAC systems, including furnaces, boilers, combi-boilers, air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductless systems.
   2. Use diagnostic tools, digital multimeters, and other equipment to identify issues and perform accurate and timely repairs.
   3. Troubleshoot system malfunctions, identify root causes, and recommend solutions to restore comfort in the home.
   4. Troubleshoot and repair refrigerant leaks, electrical issues, airflow problems, and other system-related issues.
2. Maintenance and Service:
   1. Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM) tasks on residential HVAC systems, including cleaning coils, changing filters, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical components, and ensuring all system parts are functioning optimally.
   2. Clean and replace air filters, adjust thermostats, and inspect and lubricate moving parts (e.g., fan motors, blowers) to ensure longevity and efficiency of HVAC units.
   3. Conduct comprehensive seasonal tune-ups to keep HVAC systems running at peak performance.
   4. Offer customers tips and best practices to improve energy efficiency and system longevity.
3. System Commissioning and Start-Up:
   1. Perform system start-up commissioning for newly installed HVAC units, ensuring proper installation and operational efficiency.
   2. Verify that newly installed systems are functioning correctly, making adjustments where necessary to ensure optimal performance.
   3. Test and calibrate system controls, including thermostats and dampers, to ensure they meet manufacturer specifications.
   4. Provide clients with a thorough overview of system operation, care instructions, and maintenance recommendations.
4. Sales and System Replacements:
   1. Assess the need for HVAC system replacement during service visits and provide detailed replacement estimates.
   2. Educate homeowners on available options, providing solutions that best meet their needs, preferences, and budget.
   3. Present and explain product features, benefits, and energy-saving advantages of various replacement systems.
   4. Collaborate with the sales team to close sales on HVAC system replacements, ensuring customer satisfaction and retention.
   5. Promote energy-efficient products and services that align with current environmental regulations and standards.
5. Customer Service and Communication:
   1. Maintain a professional, courteous, and helpful attitude when interacting with customers.
   2. Clearly explain technical problems and solutions to customers in a way they can understand.
   3. Ensure customers are fully informed about system conditions, maintenance needs, and replacement options.
   4. Foster positive relationships with clients, ensuring repeat business and customer loyalty.
   5. Accurately complete all service documentation, including work orders, invoices, and maintenance records.
6. Compliance and Safety:
   1. Ensure all work is completed in compliance with local building codes, safety regulations, and manufacturer’s guidelines.
   2. Adhere to company policies regarding safety protocols, including the safe handling of refrigerants and electrical components.
   3. Ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and used according to safety standards.
7. Team Collaboration and Development:
   1. Collaborate effectively with other technicians, service managers, and the installation team to provide comprehensive service.
   2. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior technicians as needed.
   3. Stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices, continuing professional development through training and certifications.
8. Perform additional tasks as required.

Education & Experience:

• Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
• EPA Section 608 Certification.
• A2L Certification
• OSHA 10
• OSHA 30 (preferred)
• MA Oil Burners License
• NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification or equivalent preferred but not required.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• 6+ years of experience as an HVAC Service Technician, with a strong background in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of residential HVAC systems.
• Experience with both conventional HVAC systems and more modern systems like ductless mini-splits, heat pumps, smart thermostats, oil systems, burners, and high efficiency boiler systems.
• Ability to install and commission varying HVAC systems.
• Proficiency with HVAC diagnostic tools, digital multimeters, and refrigerant handling.
• Strong electrical skills required
• Advanced knowledge of HVAC systems, components, and their operation.
• Ability to diagnose and repair complex HVAC issues independently.
• Experience in system start-up commissioning and installation support.
• Familiarity with energy-efficient systems and environmentally friendly refrigerants.
• Ability to assess customer needs and recommend appropriate HVAC solutions.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical customers.
• Proficiency in using CRM software to track service calls, sales leads, and customer communications.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and excellent time-management skills.
• Reliable and punctual, with a commitment to meeting deadlines and customer satisfaction.
• Requires proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This is an individual contributor position with no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

Customer settings: This position is based in customer settings and will require work in and out of doors, including in attics, basements, small-confined spaces, and rooftops.

Physical Demands:

• While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, bend, crawl, or kneel in confined spaces. The employee may be required to lift up to 100 pounds, and must be able to climb ladders, enter crawl spaces, stand on roofs, and move up and down stairs safely.
• This job may require travel in a personal or company-provided vehicle.
