Overview Description Heart Math Tutoring is a nonprofit based in Charlotte, NC with a mission of ensuring all elementary students develop a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success. HMT provides 1:1 tutoring during the school day, delivered by supervised volunteers. To date, 97% of Heart students have shown growth on pre/post assessments that meet goals set by elementary math specialists at UNC Charlotte and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and 90% of teachers annually report that student confidence increases because of the program. Founded in 2013, HMT supports 1,400+ students across 33 schools in Charlotte, NC, Charleston, SC and Winston-Salem, NC, with 50+ staff, 1,300 volunteer tutors, and significant philanthropic support. Read more at About the Role Program Coordinator : As part of ensuring high-quality tutoring sessions and a positive experience for volunteers and school staff, Heart Math Tutoring provides an on-site Program Coordinator to each school site. The Program Coordinator is present at their assigned school during tutoring sessions, where they assess students and monitor instruction, and provide ongoing training and real-time coaching to tutors. The coordinator is Heart’s liaison to the school, streamlining communication to teachers and hosting the volunteers. The coordinator builds and maintains relationships with students, families, tutors, and school staff. Responsibilities Key responsibilities include: Oversee 50 – 60 students’ growth in math skills and enthusiasm for academics Manage and support 50 – 80 weekly volunteers Liaise with teachers, school staff, and families Tasks Included Become an expert on Heart curriculum and assessments Deliver initial training and ongoing support and communication to tutors Communicate with school staff regarding curriculum, students, and schedule issues Communicate with families regarding student and program updates Design and maintain schedule of students and volunteers using Salesforce Coordinate and complete student assessments Monitor student progress and use data to support students and tutors Manage tutoring materials Attend weekly team meetings and quarterly professional development trainings Report various operational information to Program Manager Partner with Heart team to provide and receive feedback to establish a strong, scalable program model Role Scope The Program Coordinator will also be asked to play a supporting role in: Coordination of space and time logistics with school staff Act as an ambassador of Heart to personal networks, the local community, and the school site Typical Work Week A Program Coordinator typically works 18-22 hours per week from August to May, within a school-day schedule. Approximately 12 hours are designated for tutoring support at the school site, and about 6-8 hours per week are spent on staff meetings, scheduling, communications, and computer work. Hours are seasonal, with up to 30 hours per week during several weeks in September and May for program assessments and startup/closeout logistics. Requirements and Skills Desired Skills and Background A person who is successful in the role will likely have most of the following, in order of importance: Strong belief that all students can learn and perform at or above grade level Strong communication and relationship-building skills Ability/willingness to quickly build expertise in teaching, learning, and assessing Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Experience working with low-income populations Desire to work with elementary-aged students Computer skills and/or ability to learn programs including Word, Excel, email, Salesforce, file sharing (Dropbox/ Google Drive), Pencil Spaces, and video-conferencing platforms (e.g. MS Teams) Beliefs and Interests Makes Student-Centered decisions and demonstrates passion for Heart’s mission Shows Gratitude and values collaboration with students, tutors, donors, and schools Operates with a Growth Mindset and embraces feedback Demonstrates Reliability and Precision in duties and data use Values Civic Engagement and contributes to the community If you are hesitant to apply because you don’t check every box, we encourage you to do so anyway.
