About this Position Site Description The Maya Angelou Academy is an alternative school within the DC Department of Corrections that serves incarcerated men and women aged 18‑22 with individualized education plans. It is located in the Central Treatment Facility and also supports students in the Central Detention Facility. Position Overview The English Teacher will provide instructional services to scholars in a secure facility. In a single class period, the teacher will support adult scholars taking multiple courses—including accelerated offerings—across Reading/RLA, English I, II, III, and IV. Flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering instruction to meet adult scholars’ needs is essential. Key Responsibilities Facilitate multi‑grade, multi‑content coursework for groups of multi‑aged scholars, ensuring timely delivery and grading of lessons. Adapt lessons to accommodate varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels. Maintain a positive, structured learning environment for all scholars. Use restorative practices to support academic and behavioral growth. Collaborate with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff; participate in team meetings; communicate scholar progress and concerns. Ensure instructional materials comply with organizational, facility, district, and federal regulations. Prepare lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, and gradebook entries on time and in accordance with guidelines. Perform other duties as assigned to maintain a safe and effective learning environment. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in education or a subject field (required). Must be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area and obtain certification within one year of employment. Experience working with opportunity or justice‑involved youth (preferred). Salary and Benefits Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area.
