Examples of areas include but are not limited to: Archives and Digital Curation AI and Health Human-Centered AI Human-Centered Data Science Human-Computer Interaction and Design Information Behavior Information Security and Privacy We are particularly interested in information scholars whose expertise spans more than one of these areas, focuses on their intersections, or connects these areas to other areas of the information field and beyond. The Department holds the Governor Bill Daniel Professorship in Archival Enterprise, which is one of multiple endowments available to support appointments made through this search. The iSchool is one of three founding departments of UT's new School of Computing, alongside Computer Science and Statistics and Data Science. We welcome candidates whose work creates opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in those departments or elsewhere at The University of Texas at Austin, including through joint appointments. As an interdisciplinary academic unit, our faculty are drawn from a wide range of disciplines and collaborate broadly with other units across campus. We welcome applications from various disciplines including, but not limited to: information science, information studies, computer science, data science, archival studies, library and information science, human-centered computing, science and technology studies, communication, psychology, design, computational linguistics, and electrical and computer engineering. We seek strong scholars with compelling research agendas, regardless of disciplinary background. Applicants, especially those unfamiliar with iSchools, are welcome to contact us prior to submitting an application to discuss how their research connects to our department at View email address on click.appcast.io. See resources from the international iSchools organization for additional background. Research Resources and Context Faculty hired through this search will find substantial resources and collaborators at UT Austin, within the School of Computing, and within the Department. UT Austin has a world-class reputation for AI research and education. The university's online MS in Artificial Intelligence is the largest AI program at any tier-one university, complementing existing online master's programs in computer science and data science. The Center for Generative AI hosts the largest academic GPU cluster in the world and includes one of our faculty members on its team. The Texas Advanced Computing Center provides world-class AI compute resources and received a $457M award from the National Science Foundation to create a new leadership-class computing facility. UT also leads the $20M NSF AI Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning, the $20M NSF-Simons AI Institute for Cosmic Origins, and the $30M NSF Center for Human and Robot Co-Adaptation. All three involve our faculty. Health is among the most active areas of AI work at UT Austin. Dell Medical School launched a new Department of Quantitative and Systems Health Sciences in August 2026, integrating artificial intelligence, data science, and systems-level approaches to advanced discovery and health care innovation. Dell Med, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the College of Pharmacy are all on the same campus, and our faculty collaborate with colleagues across them on consumer health informatics, biomedical data, and the social dimensions of health. Strengthening these connections is a priority for the School of Computing, including through joint appointments. Responsible AI is central to UT Austin's vision for these technologies. Good Systems, the university's campus-wide responsible AI initiative, includes more than 120 researchers across 30 academic units and integrates technology, policy, law, and ethics in the pursuit of societal good. Our faculty have played a prominent role in Good Systems, serving on its leadership team and leading its core research projects. Two of our faculty secured a five-year, $3M NSF Research Traineeship award addressing the integration of responsible and ethical AI throughout the development, design, and deployment of AI technologies, which led to a new cross-campus Graduate Portfolio Program in Ethical AI. Additional work on responsible AI in the Department includes research on AI policy, design, auditing, and data collection and stewardship, including the ethical sourcing of AI training data. The Department's Information Experience Lab supports research on how people seek, evaluate, and use information, with eye-tracking, physiological measures, and usability facilities. The lab is a shared resource for work in information behavior, human-computer interaction, and human-centered data science, and it is available to faculty across the university. Austin is an unusually rich setting for archival research and education, featuring the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library. UTAustin is home to the Harry Ransom Center, the Briscoe Center for American History, and the LLILAS Benson Latin American Collections. Within the Department, our Conservation Lab supports hands-on teaching and research in the care and treatment of collections. About the Department of Information Founded in 1948, we are a founding member of the iSchools Caucus and a founding department of the School of Computing. We work at the intersection of people, information, and technology. We study how people organize, preserve, and trust information; how technology meets the people who use it; and how computing and society shape one another. We offer BA and BS degrees in Informatics, an ALA-accredited Master of Science in Information Studies, a Master of Science in Information Security and Privacy offered jointly with the UT Center for Identity, and a PhD in Information Studies. About the School of Computing Computing is bigger than any one discipline, and the biggest breakthroughs happen where technology, data, and people come together. The School of Computing brings together world-class expertise, exceptional computing power, pioneering research, and deep industry connections to address problems no single field can solve alone. Its three founding departments are Information, Computer Science, and Statistics and Data Science. About The University of Texas at Austin UT Austin has an internationally distinguished faculty, making it one of the world's leading research universities. The university embraces interdisciplinary research and is home to more than 200 dedicated research units, centers, and research grand challenges. About Austin Austin is the capital of Texas and a major technology center, home to 3M, Amazon, AMD, Apple, Applied Materials, Dell, Google, IBM, Meta, and Samsung, along with a large startup community. It is also home to substantial cultural heritage institutions, a vibrant music, film, and art scene, and the Austin City Limits and South by Southwest festivals. The city sits in the Hill Country of central Texas, with a river running through its center, and appears regularly in lists of top places to live and work. Qualifications Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to their area of research and teaching, or convincingly demonstrate that they will complete the degree before starting (for example, by documenting a scheduled defense). Candidates for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure must have a substantial record of research, teaching, and service commensurate with that rank at a leading research university. We seek candidates with outstanding records of research, teaching, mentoring, service, and leadership, with a commitment to shaping the future of the Department and the information field more broadly. Applications should make a compelling case for the intellectual contribution and merit of the candidate's research agenda. Candidates are encouraged to identify the research communities to which they belong and to which their research trajectory will contribute. Equal Employment Opportunity Statement The University of Texas at Austin, as an equal-opportunity/affirmative action employer, complies with all applicable federal and state laws regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action.
