POSITION TITLE: Principal – Adult School REPORTS TO: Designated Administrator SALARY: Certificated Management Salary Schedule - 220 days, range $148,852 - $173,088 DESCRIPTION Responsible for the overall administration, instructional leadership, and financial and operational management functions of the Adult School program. Carries out day-to-day operations and educational programs in accordance with federal, state, and district rules and regulations. Supervises all facets of the adult educational program—including career technical education, citizenship, high school completion, basic adult literacy and other programs—directed toward the optimal educational, vocational, and personal development of each adult learner. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS) Instructional Leadership & Program Development Organize, supervise, implement, and evaluate all adult educational programs at the school site in accordance with districtwide goals and instructional priorities. Provide innovative vision and long-term planning for the adult school program, incorporating adult learning theory, hands‑on training, online instruction, and experiential learning opportunities. Supervise the development and continuous improvement of curriculum to ensure alignment with industry standards, state mandates, and adult educational research. Supervise the implementation of assessment tools to guide instruction, monitor adult student academic progress, and demonstrate student achievement and graduation rates. Grant Management, Budget & Compliance Plan, coordinate, and manage projects and activities related to adult education grant funding, ensuring full compliance with state and federal requirements. Prepare and administer the annual adult education budget in cooperation with appropriate personnel; authorize and monitor expenditures. Supervise and prepare ongoing state and federal project applications, compliance reports, and documentation to support program accountability. Coordinate site visits and documentation for WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) review teams regarding school accreditation. Direct the planning, implementation, and evaluation of professional development for all site staff. Supervise and evaluate the performance of all assigned certificated and classified personnel in accordance with the District's adopted evaluation policies and collective bargaining agreements. Provide assistance and implement action plans for improving below‑standard performance as needed. Assist in the selection, assignment, and restructuring of competent staff based on adult program needs. Operations, Safety & Fiscal Management Provide a safe and orderly environment for staff and students and establish an effective learning climate. Supervise the operation, utilization, safety, and maintenance of the adult school's physical plant, classrooms, and allocated facilities. Supervise assigned auxiliary services, attendance procedures, equipment, and learning materials. Analyze student performance and program data to guide administrative decisions and operational priorities. Community Relations, Outreach & Collaboration Develop and implement a marketing and communication strategy (website, social media, community channels) to raise awareness of the adult education program and attract prospective students. Establish strong, positive working relationships with students, staff, district administrators, business partners, and local community organizations. Collaborate with district high school principals to align adult education pathways and provide opportunities for high school students preparing for high‑skill, high‑demands jobs. Foster an inclusive environment that respects and values diversity, promoting equity in education for multicultural and diverse adult learner populations. Serve on District committees for the improvement of curriculum, instruction, and administrative procedures. Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned. Knowledge of Adult learning theory, principles of organization, and project management. Federal, state, and local policies, procedures, regulations, and grant funding structures pertinent to adult education. Curriculum development, online/hybrid instructional methodologies, and career technical education strategies. Assessment and evaluation techniques utilized to appraise program quality and personnel performance. Marketing and community relations strategies for adult learner recruitment. Conflict resolution strategies, human relations, and team‑building techniques. Possession of outstanding personal characteristics, service oriented, collaborative professional style, ability to work effectively with community organizations, employers, and a diverse ethnic learning community, scholastic attainment, and ability to exercise individual initiative. Ability to: Direct, lead, and coordinate the operational and instructional components of an adult school. Demonstrate effective instructional, organizational, and administrative leadership. Analyze complex problems, generate creative solutions, and make sound decisions. Communicate effectively in both oral and written form with diverse stakeholders. Establish and maintain cooperative, positive working relationships within the school, district, and broader community. Set operational priorities, manage time effectively, and handle multiple competing responsibilities. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university preferred Experience: Any combination equivalent to: Five years of successful administrative experience, with two years of experience managing Adult Education projects, preferred. Experience working with multicultural and bilingual communities CREDENTIALS & LICENSES: Valid California Teaching Credential ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations. Ability to circulate, walk, and stand for extended periods around campus and in classrooms. Ability to see for purposes of reading laws, codes, policies, and printed material, and for observing students and facility operations. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with colleagues, clients, and the public. Manual dexterity for computer tasks and physical mobility to lift or move light office/classroom materials occasionally.
