The Work You Will Do:
AUTOMOTIVE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II /DISTRICT 4/DISTRICT MAINTENANCE-ADMINISTRATION/WEST PALM BEACH MAINTENANCE-FIELD CREW
This position is essential to the Department as its duties are to Maintain and Repair FDOT Vehicles and Equipment. With the volume of vehicle and equipment breakdowns, which are a common event, we need to be staffed to perform Preventive Maintenance to reduce breakdowns and provide safe equipment for our staff. FDOT vehicles are required to be inspected by the States’s Motor Carrier Compliance Officers on an annual basis, as well as spot checks. FDOT cannot have vehicles out of service because mechanical issues were not handled. We must have roadworthy equipment to respond to any type of call.

A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,976.00 will be added to the annual salary.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
Performs skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Field testing vehicles and equipment. Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance work to ensure that equipment is maintained and is in proper working order. Performs periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.
Complies with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies. Assists in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities. Elevates questions/items of concern to Shop Manager.
Submits requests for parts and supplies. Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders. Purchases parts and shop supplies as P card holder and is accountable for proper processing of invoices and completion of required paperwork and work orders. Operates personal computers and printers for processing warehouse commodity issue tickets and work orders.
Responds to emergency road service calls and performs minor repairs to vehicles and equipment. Cleans up after repairs and returns tools to their proper location. Performs minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.
Instructs other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment
- Diagnostic equipment;
- The use of repair manuals;
- Purchasing rules and regulations.
- All waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies
Skills in:
- The use of hand tools and mechanical equipment
- Replacing, repairing and installing various components and accessories such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc
- Documenting work performed and materials used on work orders
- Performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and various equipment
- Customer service
Ability to:
- Operate motor vehicles;
- Troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems;
- Perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance;
- Assist in body and fender repair work;
- Lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend;
- Use appropriate safety equipment; work independently;
- Follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Perform minor welding;
- Operate and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections required on commercial motor vehicle (CMV) with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 lbs. or more; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
Other Job-Related Requirements:
- During emergencies and natural disasters, incumbent shall be available to work non-standard and/or extended hours
- While on-duty status, the position's incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL-Class B with air brakes) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and two years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
- An additional year of experience, for a total of three years’ experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
- Possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes is required within 10 months of appointment to the position.
This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
