Shipping and Receiving Clerk

The Shipping and Receiving Clerk coordinates the incoming and outgoing movement and storage of raw materials, finished products, and parts to ensure materials are available and delivered on time to meet production schedules. This role supports manufacturing and distribution operations, including warehousing, shop and delivery services, and may involve operating automatic or semi-automatic machinery and related equipment in a continuous production or processing environment. The position works under moderate supervision, follows established operational procedures, and performs intermediate activities that require judgment and decision-making within production and distribution processes.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the receipt, storage, and shipment of raw materials, finished products, and parts to support production schedules and customer delivery requirements.
• Perform shipping and receiving activities, including unloading, checking, and documenting incoming materials and preparing outgoing shipments.
• Support production operations by ensuring timely material availability and delivery to manufacturing and processing areas.
• Compile data on order volume, production schedules, and forecasts, and apply basic statistical methods to estimate future material requirements.
• Handle inventory control tasks such as counting, tracking, and reconciling stock levels in warehousing and distribution areas.
• Set up and operate automatic or semi-automatic machines and related equipment in continuous production or processing operations, as needed.
• Monitor equipment performance and report any malfunctions or abnormalities to higher-level staff, following guidance on adjustments to methods and processes.
• Weigh components accurately and apply labels to materials, products, and packaging according to established procedures.
• Use RF scan guns and other warehouse technology to record transactions and maintain accurate inventory and shipment records.
• Perform packaging and packing activities to prepare products for storage or shipment in accordance with quality and safety standards.
• Interact with clean room environments as required, following appropriate handling and material flow procedures.
• Communicate with internal contacts within and outside the immediate team to obtain and provide information, offering explanations or interpretations when needed.
• Highlight areas of concern or problems in own work area and follow up with appropriate personnel to support continuous improvement.
• Provide guidance and assistance to new or entry-level employees in performing routine shipping, receiving, and production support tasks.
• Complete clerical assignments related to distribution center operations, applying prior experience and knowledge of production-related systems and procedures.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in production, distribution, shipping and receiving, or related warehouse operations.
• Full working knowledge of production-related systems and procedures gained through prior work experience or education.
• Ability to use RF scan guns and related inventory tracking technology accurately and efficiently.
• Strong attention to detail in handling materials, documentation, labeling, and inventory records.
• Experience with shipping and receiving processes, including documentation, verification, and coordination of inbound and outbound materials.
• Experience in inventory control, including counting, tracking, and reconciling stock levels.
• Ability to weigh components precisely and apply labels according to established standards.
• Capability to perform packaging and packing tasks in a production or distribution environment.
• Competence in interacting with clean room environments and following appropriate procedures when handling materials.
• Ability to operate or support forklift operations, with readiness to complete forklift training as required.
• Basic computer skills sufficient to enter, track, and review production and inventory data.
• Physical ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds and remain on feet for most of the workday.
• Ability to follow established operational procedures and work under moderate supervision with general instructions for routine work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Vocational or technical education or certification in manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, or a related field is preferred.
• Vocational training and/or certification related to production support, distribution, or equipment operation may be required.
• Experience working in manufacturing operations and/or distribution centers, including assembly, machinery, processing, packaging, or distribution of products.
• Familiarity with continuous production or processing operations and basic machine setup and operation.
• Ability to communicate clearly with internal contacts across different teams and departments.
• Experience providing guidance or assistance to new or entry-level employees in a warehouse or production setting.
• Comfort working with routine tasks while exercising sound judgment in intermediate-level activities.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing and distribution center environment that involves frequent use of computers, RF scan guns, and material handling equipment such as forklifts. The schedule includes a second shift from approximately 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and a weekday shift from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, depending on operational needs. The position is physically active, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and spend most of the day on foot in warehousing, shipping, receiving, and production support areas. Work may involve interacting with clean rooms, handling packaged components, and operating or working around automatic and semi-automatic machinery in continuous production or processing operations. Forklift training is provided as needed to ensure safe and compliant equipment use.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
