Job Description Under general supervision, the Plumber performs skilled plumbing work at the journey level. Incumbents employ standard trade practices and skills to install, maintain, and repair County owned plumbing systems. Responsibilities Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems for County properties. Knowledge Occupational hazards and safety rules and regulations of the plumbing trade Current laws, codes, and ordinances regulating all aspects of plumbing Standard methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in the plumbing trade Theory and operation of plumbing systems and fixtures Hydraulics as it relates to flow rates, pipe sizes, and water pressures The use and care of plumbing tools and equipment Basic record‑keeping procedures Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications related to area of assignment Basic arithmetic (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, ratios, and fractions) English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation Principles of effective customer service Ability to Work in a safe manner in accordance with government codes, and safety rules and regulations of the trade Interpret, understand, and work from blueprints, shop drawings, and manuals Compute labor and material costs Maintain accurate and orderly records of labor and materials Work independently or as part of a crew Read, write and speak English at a level necessary to perform the job Establish and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with customers, co‑workers, other agencies and the general public Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action Effectively organize and prioritize work assignments Make arithmetical computations accurately and rapidly Maintain confidential information Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations Apply customer service skills, including the identification of customer needs and follow up to ensure customer commitments have been met Minimum Qualifications Successful completion of a five year state accredited plumber apprenticeship program in a commercial and/or industrial environment Or five years of full‑time paid experience as a plumber General Qualifications Criminal History and Background Checks The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with applicable laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate’s ability to perform the job duties of this class unless mitigating circumstances exist. License Requirement A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, may be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate license may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with civil service rules. Compliance with California Code of Regulations Positions in this class are required to comply with Title8 of the California Code of Regulations and related safety and health orders. Physical Requirements Incumbents must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and stoop for extended periods; work in bent, kneeling, or prone positions for over 15 minutes; use manual dexterity to manipulate objects; climb ladders; reach above shoulder height; lift equipment up to 75pounds and push up to 150pounds; work while wearing approved personal protective equipment. Working Conditions Incumbents may work in a variety of locations including prison, mental health care, animal care, and coroner facilities. Work may involve open sewage, loud or noisy conditions, inclement and very hot weather, enclosed tight spaces, machinery with moving parts, dust, fumes, and various shift, overtime, weekend, holiday, and non‑routine hours.
