GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Operates various types of motor equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operation; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class operates various types of motor equipment and performs manual duties in connection with the operation of motor equipment. An employee in this class may be required to be available for work at other than regularly scheduled hours or any day of the week. Supervision may be exercised over personnel.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Operates a truck for the collection/removal of brush, leaves, debris, snow, and the transportation

of stone, gravel and other supplies/material;

Operates a tractor or truck with power mower, snow loader, bulldozer, or other attachment;

Operates trucks to vacuum catch basins and power-flush sewers;

Operates an air compressor;

Operates a passenger bus or van;

Excavates with a power shovel;

Lays and rolls asphalt for road pavement;

Operates a power grader, steam roller, scavenger, crane, or snow plow;

Loads, delivers and sets up equipment for parks and recreation activities and events;

Cleans City streets with power sweeper, or flusher truck;

Performs minor repairs on automotive equipment;

Performs manual labor, such as loading trucks, digging ditches, flushing and cleaning catch

basins and raking leaves;

Performs operator maintenance on assigned equipment;

Oversees the work of laborers engaged in loading and unloading trucks;

Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition;

Fills out work reports;

Loads and unloads hazardous materials used by the Department of Public Works in accordance

with environmental and safety standards.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Good knowledge of safe driving techniques with heavy automotive and peripheral equipment; skill in the operation of tractors, trucks, and other automotive equipment in all kinds of weather conditions and ambient light; ability to perform routine equipment maintenance; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to deal with the public in a courteous manner; mechanical aptitude; industry; good judgment; dependability; ability to perform in a reasonable manner the essential functions of the position.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years experience in the operation of commercial motor equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (ClassB).

Preferred Endorsements: “M” Metal Coil and “W” Tow Truck
