You will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce Federal criminal and civil laws that protect life, liberty and the property of citizens. Responsibilities Represent the United States’ interest in the trial and appellate courts for a wide variety of federal and state litigation, including bankruptcy, civil rights, commercial, constitutional, employment, environmental, federal program, fraud, immigration, medical malpractice, patent, prisoner, social security, summons enforcement, tax, and general tort cases. Defend the United States’ interests in civil cases and matters involving employment discrimination allegations, tort law, immigration law, the Constitution, the Administrative Procedure Act, and FOIA. Handle own caseload and trials, with responsibilities increasing and assignments becoming more complex with training and experience. Requirements You must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks and drug testing; continued employment requires a favorable background investigation. You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. J.D. degree and active membership in the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction are required. You must reside in the district to which you are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications Applicants must possess superior oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, good judgment, and the ability to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Preferred: Direct experience litigating civil cases in the federal courts and/or a federal judicial clerkship. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. degree. Salary Information The Assistant United States Attorney pay range is $65,563 to $171,487, with additional locality pay based on location: Alexandria, VA – 33.94% Norfolk, VA – 18.80% Newport News, VA – 18.80% Richmond, VA – 22.28% Benefits The Department of Justice offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Travel Occasional travel may be required.
