Animal Science Farm Operations Professional Location: Tifton Area Employment Type: Full Time Position Summary This position is responsible for providing leadership and management at the Tifton Animal Science Farm and supervising full‑time and temporary farm staff. The incumbent works cooperatively with the FRS Superintendent, ADS Senior Farm Manager, and faculty to plan, organize, direct, implement, and complete daily operational tasks. Research activities include small‑plot to large‑scale field trials and animal feeding and grazing trials. The employee promotes the university’s image by maintaining an attractive herd and farm, and oversees training, evaluation, scheduling, animal care protocols, animal and forage production, feed procurement, and support of research, extension, and instruction activities. Special Instructions to Applicants Required: Hold and maintain Beef Quality Assurance certifications, a valid Georgia Pesticide Applicator license, and a Class A CDL license. If certifications/licenses are not held by hire date, acquire Beef Quality Assurance certifications within 6 months, Georgia Pesticide Applicator license within 3 months, and Class A CDL license within 12 months of start date. College will provide tuition support and flextime for pursuit of the Class A CDL license at Southern Regional Technical College. Program information available at Southern Regional Technical College. Qualifications Previous leadership or management experience leading a multi‑functional team. Knowledge of livestock and forage production management practices for beef cattle feeding and maintenance. Ability to organize and prioritize work activities in beef production, forage production, and field research. Ability to maintain farm, research, and beef management records as specified by research faculty and the ADS Senior Farm Manager. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Computer technology proficiency. Ability to work with cattle using low‑stress handling and follow Beef Quality Assurance best practices. Ability to prioritize, plan, and direct coworkers while maintaining effective relationships. Flexibility to adjust priorities based on weather and research goals. Ability to acquire and maintain Beef Quality Assurance certifications, Georgia Pesticide Applicator license, and Class A CDL license. Technical competency with seedbed preparation, planting, management, and harvest of forage crops. Physical Demands Lift, push, and carry up to 75 pounds. Work in environmental extremes and outdoor conditions including heat, cold, and wet. Work around livestock with dust, noise, smells, etc. Work varied schedules according to farm needs. Drive as needed to perform job duties. Responsibilities Provide oversight and direction to farm staff, operations, and research programs; manage large animal care, farm operations, and facilities maintenance. Ensure animals are fed during weekends and holidays. Collaborate with senior management and direct paraprofessionals to coordinate forage and livestock production, waste management, irrigation, equipment repairs, biosecurity, and research. Communicate with faculty and adhere to research protocols. Consider research and study integrity before making changes to facilities and equipment. Use the P‑Card to purchase supplies and inventory in coordination with the ADS Senior Farm Manager and FRS Superintendent. Engage in positive coaching when directing students and inexperienced support personnel. Maintain electronic records including field operations, waste, herd management, and P‑Card transaction logs. Oversee routine animal care: assess health, administer vaccinations, treat sick or injured animals, and branding/tagging. Ensure staff and students comply with standards and protocols; provide corrective action when animal health is at risk. Develop and improve standard operating procedures with FRS Superintendent, ADS Senior Farm Manager, and research teams. Facilitate farm visits for industry, ranchers, classes, and field days. Comply with all UGA and USG policies, procedures, and training requirements. Assist at the Alapaha Range Grazing Station and Irwinville Bull Test Facility as needed.
