Animal Science Farm Operations Professional

Position Summary This position is responsible for providing leadership and management at the Tifton Animal Science Farm and supervising full-time and temporary farm staff. Responsibilities include working cooperatively with the FRS Superintendent, ADS Senior Farm Manager and faculty in planning, organizing, directing, implementing, and completing tasks associated with daily operations. Research activities on the farm include small plot to large-scale field trials and animal feeding and grazing trials. This employee will be accountable for promoting the image of the University by maintaining the herd and farm in a neat and attractive manner. Supervisory activities will include training, evaluation, and scheduling work; implementing protocols to ensure proper animal care and health; maintaining animal and forage production; procuring feed ingredients, supplies, and equipment; and supporting research, extension, and instruction activities. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent Special Certifications Required Beef Quality Assurance certifications Georgia Pesticide Applicators licence Class A CDL licence (Commercial Driver's Licence) Successful candidates who do not hold these certifications by hire date must acquire all within specified time frames: 6 months for BQA certifications, 3 months for pesticide licence, and 12 months for CDL. For more information visit Key Responsibilities Provide oversight and direction to farm staff, operations, and research programmes, including hands‑on large animal care, field preparation, planting, harvesting, and equipment maintenance. Coordinate activities with senior management, including forage and livestock production, waste management, irrigation, equipment repairs, animal biosecurity, and research. Communicate with faculty members and adhere to research protocols. Make decisions that preserve research integrity when modifying facilities or equipment. Use the P‑Card to purchase supplies and inventory in coordination with the ADS Senior Farm Manager and FRS Superintendent. Engage in positive coaching of students and support personnel. Maintain electronic records of field operations, waste, herd management, and P‑Card transaction logs. Provide routine animal care: assess health, administer vaccines, treat illnesses, brand/tag animals, and document health status. Ensure staff and students comply with animal care standards and protocols. Develop and improve standard operating procedures with the FRS Superintendent, ADS Senior Farm Manager, and research teams. Facilitate farm visits for industry, ranchers, classes, and field days. Assist at the Alapaha Range Grazing Station and Irwinville Bull Test Facility as needed. Adhere to all UGA and USG policies, procedures, and training requirements. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Previous leadership and/or management experience leading a multi‑functional team. Knowledge of livestock and forage production management practices for beef cattle feeding and maintenance. Ability to organise and prioritise work activities involved in beef production, forage production, and field research. Ability to maintain farm, research, and beef management records. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Computer literacy. Experience with low‑stress cattle handling and BQA best practices. Ability to lead, plan, and direct coworkers and maintain effective working relationships. Flexibility to adjust priorities based on weather and research goals. Ability to acquire and maintain BQA certifications, pesticide licence, and CDL licence. Technical competency with seedbed preparation, planting, management, and harvest of forage crops. Physical Demands Lift, push, and carry up to 75 pounds. Work in extreme environmental conditions including heat, cold, and wet weather. Work around livestock with dust, noise, smells, etc. Work varied schedules according to farm needs. Drive as needed to perform job duties. This is a position of trust with financial responsibilities and access to funds; a P‑Card is required but not an essential function. Security access to personnel records, chemicals, etc. is required. Background investigation, credit check (for financial responsibilities), and potential drug testing may be required.
