Job ResponsibilitiesThe Heavy Equipment/Diesel Engine Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining large machinery used in various industries, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely as well as responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing diesel lowered vehicles and machinery, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely. Position reports to the Plant Manager and has no supervisory responsibilities.Conducts regular inspections and preventive maintenance on heavy equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, and excavators, to ensure optimal performance and safety; performs diagnostic tests on diesel engines and vehicles to identify issues and determine necessary repairs.Uses computerized diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical issues and performs routine maintenance and major repairs on engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and other critical systemsWorks closely with operators, mechanics, and technicians to diagnose equipment issues, provide maintenance guidance, and develop repair plansMaintains detailed and accurate records of all preventive maintenance (PM) performed for compliance and tracking purposes.Test drive vehicles after repairs to ensure they are functioning correctly and safely. Inspect machines, engines, transmissions etc. and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues.Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliabilityOrder and maintain necessary parts for equipment repairsCollaborate/communicate with Plant Manager and General Yard Foreman on equipment repairs/downtime for planning of yard operationsTroubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely mannerPerform thorough maintenance on machinery, equipment and systemsMaintain all safety devices and systems on equipment in accordance with regulations and Koppers Zero Harm principlesClean and apply lubricants to machinery componentsReplenish fluids and components of engines and machineryProvide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle usersUndertake other duties as assigned (e.g. repair of hydraulic systems, painting vehicles etc.)Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe workspace, adhering to local and national regulationsCandidate Qualifications/ RequirementsRequired:3-5 years’ Heavy Equipment Mechanic and DieselRepair experience required.Along with knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.Certificate from Tech school or equivalent work experienceMust have a valid driver’s licenseMust have great attention to detailBasic computer skillsAbility to work with various machines and toolsExperience working in small teamsKnowledge of various types of heavy equipmentVery strong mechanical knowledgeAbility to fill out logs on all equipment worked onKnowledge on OSHA regulations pertaining to this positionMust have a safety-first mindsetPreferred:Welding experience preferredExtensive safety trainingPhysical & Work RequirementMust be able to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear.Must be able to work in all outside weather conditions (wet, hot, cold)Able to work with a moderate noise levelAbility to create 20-30 plus pounds of pressure, sometimes above shoulder levelAbility to climb in tight spotsPPE includes, but not limited to steal toed boots, heat-resistant gloves, protective mask, ear plugs and, safety glassesAbility to lift up to 50lbsKoppers Inc. and its subsidiaries are equal opportunity employers.
