Manager of Physical Operations The Department of Biochemistry invites applications for a full‑time Manager of Physical Operations. The incumbent reports to the Department Chair and Director and provides primary operational leadership for a large, complex biomedical science department that houses approximately 23 labs, two service‑recharge centers, and shared research equipment. Position Overview The role is responsible for daily operational planning, supervision of core physical‑operations staff, vendor management, space planning, building repairs and modifications, equipment maintenance, and safety compliance. The Manager collaborates closely with faculty, staff, students and postdocs to meet the department’s research, education and healthcare mission. Key Responsibilities Manage departmental inventory records ($45M) and ensure compliance with university, state and federal audit standards (10%). Oversee storage, disposal and surplus management of sensitive lab equipment and furniture (10%). Develop and maintain fire‑safety and evacuation policies, including training materials and procedures in line with state, local and university regulations (10%). Assist incoming faculty with lab setup, including forecasting, troubleshooting and transition management (10%). Maintain coverage for glassware washing, autoclave facilities, Biochemistry Stores and other services; prepare rate proposals (10%). Maintain shared resources and equipment, manage service‑contract budgets, and support the Beckman Cryo‑EM Center and Neurath Biophysics Core (10%). Act as building‑access coordinator (10%). Maintain accuracy of departmental space records in the UW Space Manager system (10%). Oversee laboratory renovations and projects, including budget management of work orders (10%). Provide operational reporting for planning, budgeting and strategic goal achievement (5%).Other duties as assigned (5%). Required Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in business or facilities administration, life sciences or a related field and at least four years of demonstrated experience in facilities management in a scientific environment. Additional Qualifications Experience using spreadsheets and databases. Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently and creatively. Strong customer‑service orientation and ability to work with diverse groups. Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing requirements. Demonstrated supervisory experience under tight deadlines and exacting standards. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with UW policies, procedures and systems related to facilities, inventory, procurement and employee health and safety. Background in life sciences and familiarity with scientific equipment. Strong motivation, enthusiasm and self‑starter attributes. Working Environment Office and laboratory settings within the Health Sciences Building J‑ and K‑wings. Compensation and Benefits Pay Range: $90,000.00 – $102,000.00 annual.
