Overview The Sunshine Water Services team has an opportunity for a Water‑Wastewater Operator II . This role is under general supervision and performs routine tasks related to the operation of water and/or wastewater treatment facilities. The operator maintains plant compliance with EPA standards and state water commissions, performs general cleaning of grounds and buildings, and ensures plant safety and sanitary requirements. Work Location and Schedule This position will travel between service areas near Clermont, FL. The schedule is Monday through Friday. After‑hour and weekend on‑call support may be required. The operator will undertake constant, independent travel daily between worksites on company time and respond to emergency situations as required. What You'll Do Operate and maintain water and/or wastewater treatment equipment, ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental protection limits. Monitor and sample water, well, and groundwater upon entry to the system; adjust treatment levels when below‑standard variances are detected; sample water prior to exiting the system. Detect and report atypical conditions such as damaged meters, leaks, high/low consumption, exposed wiring, and other safety hazards. Conduct ongoing repairs to equipment or shut down equipment for extensive maintenance and repair, activating alternate equipment as needed; request services of outside maintenance vendors for major repairs and overhauls. Activate pumps, valves, and other processing equipment to move water through various treatment processes; dispose of waste materials removed from water in line with company procedures and government controls. Assist Lead Operator with emergency procedures in the event of overflow or spill of chemicals or unpurified water; follow safety protocol. Add chemicals to water by predetermined formula; advise Lead Operator when minimum inventory levels of these materials have been reached. Read and interpret meters and gauges on central control panels or individual machines; adjust controls as needed; retrieve computer reports on treatment processes. Prepare reports and maintain logs on meter readings, tests, chemicals and equipment usage, and all recordkeeping requirements; maintain various company records and other reports as required by the state. Back‑wash filters and basins; handle chlorine safely; assure proper working order of chlorine‑related equipment. Clean and maintain treatment plant, pumping stations, wells, and equipment; paint equipment, walls and floors as needed. Ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to company policies and standards. Maintain a safe working environment and report safety concerns to the Area Manager. Respond to on‑call rotations and emergencies as scheduled. Complete facility and vehicle inspections and related follow‑up. Install and read water meters. Act as liaison between customers and customer service; provide on‑site customer communication. Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless utility service. Ensure that facilities and grounds are kept clean, orderly, and comply with company standards. Experience and Qualifications 3–5 years mechanical experience, including at least 3 years specializing in chemical treatment of water and/or wastewater or a minimum of 3 years in the water and/or wastewater utility field with experience in the operation and maintenance of groundwater‑supplied water systems and associated distribution systems. High school diploma required. Current second‑level operator license per state regulation; may be in the process of obtaining third‑level license. Valid driver’s license. Physical and Technical Skills Ability to frequently perform moderate to heavy physical demands, including lifting up to 75 lbs., walking 10+ miles daily, climbing, and mechanical repair. Ability to read meters, charts and gauges and accurately maintain records of plant operations. Ability to read and comprehend written technical information and communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and analyze data. Ability to perform mathematical equations to determine chemical doses required for flow rates and proper treatment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co‑workers and regulatory agencies. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.Ability to operate, maneuver and control equipment, machinery, tools and materials used in performing essential functions. Familiarity with computer applications MS Word, Excel, and laptop/tablet/mobile device; ability to learn internal software programs. Work Environment Employees will work in all weather conditions: rain, snow, extreme heat and cold.
