Plant Operator II - Water/Wastewater

Job Description Under general supervision, performs responsible technical work in the operation of a water or sewer treatment plant on an assigned shift. Is responsible for performing plant operation and maintenance duties in a professional manner consistent with standard operating practices to meet State and Federal standards and rules to protect public health and the environment. Reports to Superintendent of Operations. Essential Job Functions Inspect plant equipment and machinery to ensure proper operation. Take samples of water or sewage at various stages of the treatment process and perform routine laboratory analyses to determine effectiveness of treatment procedures, recording results. Adjust treatment plant equipment such as chlorinators, lime shakers, flocculators, digesters, sludge collectors, sand filters, chemical feeders, vacuum filters, conveyor systems, screens and related equipment based on sample results. Inspect recording charts and meters, making adjustments to controls in conformance with operating instructions. Perform general building maintenance and custodial work at plant. Assist mechanics in major repairs and installation work and service a variety of plant equipment and machinery; clean and paint equipment. Instruct new operators in plant procedures and operations; keep records and prepare periodic summary reports of operations. Perform physical tests (turbidity, color, odor, taste and temperature) and chemical tests (pH, alkalinity, carbon dioxide, hardness, metal content, residual chlorine, fluoride) and bacteriological tests such as chloroform bacteria, plate count, etc. Clean and maintain bar screens. Maintain sufficient supplies of chemicals including chlorine, aluminum, Calgon, lime carbon, sodium chloride and other chemicals. Monitor control panel charts and pressure gauges. Answer emergency phone calls, re‑connect services and dispatch proper personnel. Operate motorized equipment such as a bobcat, backhoe, and vacuum truck used in the sewage treatment process. Assign daily laboratory, sampling, and maintenance requirements to shift operators. Report immediately any serious plant breakdown or condition likely to cause inefficient or unsafe treatment plant operation or discharge of water or wastewater in non‑authorized manner. Maintain an operation and maintenance log for the treatment plants. Submit accurate reports relative to plant operation, sampling and laboratory analysis on a daily basis and timely monthly operating reports as prescribed in Florida Administrative Code and required by EPA and NPDES permits. Minimum Requirements Graduation from high school or vocational school. Two (2) or more years of experience in operation of electrical and mechanical machinery similar to that in a water and sewer treatment plant, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification and License Required Possession of a Class “B” water or wastewater plant operators license from the Florida Department of Professional Regulation. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; driver’s license must not have been suspended within five (5) years of the date of application. May be required to possess a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an air brake endorsement issued by the State of Florida. Benefits Utilities Incentive (due to terminate on September 30, 2026) $100 per pay period; $1,000 paid in June 2026 (prorated based on hire date) Health insurance – 100% paid by the Town for single coverage, 50% paid for dependents. Leave: 13 holiday days per year; 3.69 hours sick leave accrued per pay period; 2 weeks vacation per year with accrual increases; birthday leave, quality service leave, and wellness days after passing probation. Pension/Retirement – Town Sponsored Pension mandatory 3% contribution per pay period; 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Uniforms provided by the Department.
