Under the direction of the Information Technology Manager I in the Technology Services Division's (TSD) Technical Operations and Support Office, the Information Technology Specialist I (ITS-I) serves as a software developer supporting the California Department of Education's (CDE) ServiceNow applications and services. The duties of ITS-I are within the Software Engineering domain of the ITS-I classification which includes the design, development, operation, and maintenance of software systems.

Acts as a lead software developer and subject matter expert on ServiceNow related development projects. Develops ServiceNow workflow solutions using ServiceNow's toolstack (e.g., Developer Studio, Flow Designer, and multiple other built-in implementation tools including the use of JavaScript). Collaborates across the TSD to develop, enhance, and automate software processes, including development, integration, testing, deployment, and monitoring of the application. Develop, design, and roll out new ServiceNow application modules, workflows, catalogs, and enhancements to address business needs. Provides defect resolution, actively addressing bugs and issues with existing and new ServiceNow applications.

Leads collaborative sessions with diverse technical and non-technical colleagues, business clients, and other stakeholders who hold varying perspectives on requirements and priorities. Regularly attend project meetings and provide status on activities and deliverables. Designs ServiceNow applications based on user stories and requirements gathered by business analysts, clarifying requirements as needed with program owners and other stakeholders as appropriate. Works on ServiceNow related software development projects using Scrum or other Agile frameworks chosen by the project lead. Generates and breaks down user stories and requirements into tasks of appropriate, addressable size. Participate in all technical aspects of TSD's ServiceNow solution delivery.

Develops and maintains proper, useful, and complete written and graphical documentation for ServiceNow systems and projects. Maintain and administer appropriate application and module access for ServiceNow users.

Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027. This position is headquartered in Sacramento and may be eligible for a hybrid telework schedule for eligible applicants residing in California. A hybrid telework schedule includes working remotely and working a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.
