Engineering Technologies Teaching AssistantThis position is responsible for providing laboratory instruction, technical laboratory maintenance support, and instructional assistance within Engineering Technologies programs. This position also supports the operation and maintenance of instructional laboratories and resources, college equipment and college vehicles. This position is 12 months, full-time.Essential Duties and Responsibilities - TEACHING AND LAB INSTRUCTION The teaching load for this position is 15 contact hours for classes and/or labs fall and spring semesters. Conducting in a professional manner all laboratory and instructional hours as assigned by the course schedule and academic calendar. Teaching assignments may include Engineering Technologies disciplines, including Automotive Systems Technology and other related engineering technology programs. Supervising scheduled laboratory and instructional activities. Working closely with faculty to prepare instructional materials and administer, collect, and grade appropriate assignments, assessments, and laboratory activities. Creating, administering, and accurately assessing substantive assignments and activities that require critical thinking and application of technical skills. Meeting classes and laboratories on time and for the full duration of the published schedule. Posting and maintaining office hours as required and being available to support student learning and success. Notifying the Director and Automotive faculty as soon as possible in the event of illness. Maintaining alternative educational activities that students may use remotely or during faculty absences. Supporting and following college policies and procedures. Preparing and submitting accurate and timely attendance records, student grades, book orders, leave reports, and other assigned documentation. Assisting with the development of student learning outcomes and assessments, including collection of student artifacts for college-wide General Education Assessment. Preparing supplemental teaching activities, developing Moodle course materials, consulting with students, referring struggling students for tutoring, and facilitating review sessions outside regularly scheduled class times. Participating actively in instructional planning and program improvement processes. LABORATORY, EQUIPMENT, AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT Assuming reasonable responsibility for the security, maintenance, operation, and inventory of assigned laboratory equipment, vehicles, tools, and instructional resources. Maintaining knowledge of safety practices applicable to Engineering Technologies instructional laboratories. Assisting in the development, implementation, and enforcement of laboratory safety practices and procedures. Ordering, maintaining, organizing, and inventorying laboratory supplies, parts, materials, tools, equipment, and stockroom resources. Scheduling maintenance, inspections, and servicing of Surry Community College vehicles and equipment as needed. Assisting faculty with laboratory preparation, equipment setup, troubleshooting, and instructional support activities. Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and work environment. Participating in staff development and technical training activities to enhance job performance and maintain current industry knowledge. Maintaining knowledge of Engineering Technologies program operations and college resources in order to provide appropriate assistance to students, faculty, and visitors. Performing other job-specific duties as assigned by the Director of Engineering Technologies or Chief Academic Officer. COLLEGE SERVICE Participating in activities that promote the welfare and advancement of the College. These activities may include committee service, accreditation support, recruitment and marketing efforts, student organization support, and other institutional initiatives. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Participating in mandatory institutional professional development activities. Participating in professional development activities related to Engineering Technologies, technical instruction, laboratory management, safety, and emerging industry trends. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College and to the philosophy of the community college system.Required Qualifications - Associate Degree in field, or related field, of division served; experience/proficiency in the use of integrated software (Microsoft Word and Excel), effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to coordinate and prioritize office dutiesPreferred Qualifications - Experience in an educational office setting with strong technical knowledge.Physical Demands - The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
