Job Opportunity – Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Ortho Trauma/General Surgery) – North Carolina

Start Date: November 16, 2026
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Compensation: Details provided to qualified applicants
Schedule: 12-hour night shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM), 36 or 48 hours per week, every other weekend required, no call

Highlights:

• Acute care medical surgical unit specializing in orthopedic trauma, general surgery overflow, and neurological trauma patients
• Patient ratios of 1:5-6 with a daily census of approximately 32 patients
• Epic charting system with Pyxis medication management
• Contract lengths available from 13 to 26 weeks
• Comprehensive 28-hour orientation including 12 hours unit-specific and 16 hours organizational education
• Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations as needed

Requirements:

• Active North Carolina or Compact RN license
• BLS certification required; ACLS preferred
• Minimum 2 years of experience in orthopedic, neurological, or trauma nursing
• Must be comfortable managing patient ratios of 1:5-6
• Charge nurse experience preferred
• First-time travelers accepted
• Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)
• Must pass EKG testing prior to start date
• Must complete pre-start online modules (8-10 hours) using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge

Clinical Skills:

• Management of orthopedic trauma, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and subdural hematomas
• Experience with chest tubes, central line management, external fixators, and heparin drips
• Proficiency in telemetry monitoring, interpretation of dysrhythmias and arterial blood gases
• Competency with feeding tube management, tracheostomy care, wound care/wound vacs, and surgical drains
• Blood product administration, PCA management, and isolation precautions

Position Details:

• Patient population includes severe bone, joint, and soft tissue injuries; traumatic brain injuries; spine injuries; and neurological trauma
• Interdisciplinary support available including IV teams, physical therapy, respiratory services, pharmacy, rapid response teams, and lift teams
• Uniform requirement: Navy or white scrubs
• Contract staff may be assigned to Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualties, or disasters
• Requested time off limited to 7 days maximum (no holidays); must work 2 of 3 major holidays; RTO after booking is not permitted
