Performs a variety of routine janitorial work to ensure the cleanliness, sanitation, and safety of community centers and City recreation facilities.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs a variety of routine housekeeping duties in assigned City recreation facilities and community centers. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, supplemented by instructions on new or unusual assignments. Work includes sweeping and mopping floors; vacuuming carpets; dusting; cleaning restrooms, lobbies and front desk areas, and kitchen areas; scrubbing toilets and sinks; cleaning ovens and stoves; cleaning glass windows and doors; emptying trash; maintaining supplies and storage area; and minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and unclogging toilets. Work requires the ability to operate equipment related to custodial care and the use of chemical cleaning supplies. Employee must abide by safety rules and regulations and the use, care, and accuracy in handling chemical cleaning supplies. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, loud noise, vibration, hazards associated with maintenance work, fumes, chemicals, mists, gases and oils. Duties may also expose the employees to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under the general supervision and is reviewed by observation of quality and quantity of work completed and timeliness of completion.
Essential Functions
Performs a variety of routine janitorial tasks interior cleaning and minor maintenance tasks at assigned recreation facilities. Maintains restrooms in a sanitary condition; cleans and disinfects toilets, sinks and floors; wipes walls; polishes mirrors; replenishes restroom supplies, soap, and paper towels; picks up and empties trash.
Sweeps, vacuums, mops, and scrubs floor surfaces; strips and waxes floors. Performs specialized floor care; operates industrial floor cleaning equipment such as floor buffers and automatic scrubbers to wash, clean, buff and maintain large floor areas such as gymnasium courts, multi-purpose rooms, and high-traffic hallways. Cleans kitchen and dining areas; cleans sinks, microwaves, ovens and stoves as needed. Washes and cleans glass windows, doors, blinds and light fixtures; sanitizes door handles. Dusts, cleans and polishes building furniture and fixtures, baseboards, woodwork, and shelves. Empties and cleans trash receptacles; disposes of trash in the dumpsters. Performs minor housekeeping maintenance tasks such as unclogging toilets and sinks and replacing light bulbs. Stocks and maintains janitorial storage supply rooms; maintains cleaning supply inventory; notifies supervisor of supply needs; maintains supplies at each location in neat order.
Responds to custodial emergencies such as spills and clean ups. Moves and cleans furniture; may assist with setting up rooms for meetings as requested. Inspects buildings for safety or maintenance problems; reports problems as necessary. Operates a variety of cleaning equipment including high speed buffer, scrubber, vacuum cleaners, brooms, mops, wringers, dusting equipment and various hand tools.
Performs routine grounds maintenance outside of facilities including sweeping sidewalks, removing trash, blowing leaves, and maintaining entryways. Safely mixes and applies cleaning chemicals and stripping agents with the machinery. Assists with the setup, arrangement, and breakdown of equipment, tables, chair, staging and other equipment for special events. Assists with installation and dismantling of the air dome over the swimming pool.
May operate a vehicle to drive to building locations throughout the day/week.
Follows all safety regulations and procedures in the performance of work and in the use of chemical cleaning supplies. Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, supplies and equipment. Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions. Working knowledge of safety equipment and procedures required in performance of duties. Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials use in assigned work.
Skill and care in the operation of a variety of custodial equipment and hand tools.
Ability to understand and follow instructions and to work independently. Ability to identify cleaning needs and resolve with appropriate methods and supplies. Ability to make minor repairs on kitchen and bathroom facilities. Ability to follow instructions and labels on cleaning supplies and equipment.
Ability to perform manual labor requiring continuous physical effort. Ability to observe and report needs for maintenance and supplies. Ability to prepare simple records of work activities. Ability to deal courteously with the City staff and the public. Ability to safely use varied equipment required in performance of duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the general public.
Desirable Education and Experience Graduation from high school or equivalent and some experience in the custodial field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to make visual inspections of work assigned and completed, operate equipment in the performance of maintenance tasks.
