Editorial Coordinator - Production

Role Description

At AAAS’s gold open access journal Science Advances, the Editorial Coordinator--Production assists the Advances production team in the processing individual manuscripts that comprise the journal each week in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. The EC-Production will work in the journal’s online production system, reviewing author responses to queries and assessing additional queries regarding figures and supplementary materials. This may require daily interaction with external authors and editors answering questions, proofreading author corrections, and approving final files for publication. The EC-Production also communicates and coordinates with internal staff and vendors to identify and help address problems so that manuscripts move smoothly through the review and production system according to institutional standards and guidelines.

Location Requirement: This position is remote; however, candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area.

What You’ll Do:

• Proofreading author-corrected proofs for clarity and adherence to journal style guidelines
• Learning journal style
• Approving final files for publication
• Communicating with authors about their corrections and answering questions they may have
• Communicating with vendors to address status queries or technical issues
• Processing post-publication corrections
• Answering general editorial inbox queries related to assigned manuscripts (author status queries, technical issues, other)
• Attending weekly staff and vendor meetings
• Transmitting final papers

Qualifications

• A minimum of 1-2 years of experience working in a professional setting
• A bachelor’s degree in English or a science-related discipline is preferred. Recent college graduates also considered.
• Experience with project management and ability to meet deadlines
• Copyediting and/or proofreading experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Strong attention to detail, organization, multitasking, time management, and conflict resolution skills needed for juggling many diverse tasks
• Demonstrated success in deadline-oriented environment
• Strong skills in identifying, communicating, and addressing issues
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Eagerness for developing new knowledge and skills related to job duties
• Strong working knowledge of MS Office and Adobe software
• Ability to adapt to new tasks, workflows, and tools/technologies in a changing organizational environment
