Position Details Requisition Number: R‑22314 Facility: LOC0001 – 55 Fogg Road, Weymouth, MA 02190 Department: SSH General Surgery PB Status: Full Time Budgeted Hours: 36 Shift: Day (United States of America) Under the medical direction of the MD Chair of Surgery as well as the Executive Director of APCs, the PA will evaluate, treat and manage patients with surgical conditions. Compensation $123,947.20 – $224,122.21 Education & Licenses Minimum Education – Preferred: Graduate of an AMA‑recognized Physician Assistant training program accredited by the ACR‑PA. Required Licenses / Registrations: PA – Physician Assistant. Classes / Skills: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – required; ATLS – preferred. Responsibilities Practice in accordance with acceptable medical standards; inform each patient that the PA is not a physician and that services are rendered under the supervision of a full licensee. Review historical and physical data in accordance with medical staff by‑laws and regulations. Work as a member of the general surgery team: Attending Physicians, BWH surgical residents, and PAs. Render emergency medical service to avoid disability or death until a doctor arrives. Participate in the hospital’s quality improvement and risk management programs. Complete medical records in a timely manner according to the medical staff by‑laws. Perform the following key tasks: Write admission orders and perform detailed histories and physicals for general surgery & trauma patients. First assist in the operating room for general surgery coverage & other surgical subspecialties. Conduct daily patient rounds, follow‑up on all patients and consults, including physical exams, diagnostics, therapeutic interventions, and ordering routine labs and tests. Perform procedures such as phlebotomy, insertion/removal of chest tubes, management of pleurovacs, surgical drains, percutaneous tubes, insertion and management of NGT, DHT, Foley catheters, and simple wound closures. Provide patient education and participate in the education of surgical residents, fellow PAs, nurses, and students. Perform BLS and ACLS measures as needed. Serve as the primary responding clinician receiving pages from nursing staff regarding patient care. A PA may not obtain surgical consents, autopsy permission, or organ donation permission. Record keeping and written orders: Write and sign progress notes, discharge summaries, and transfer summaries; follow house officer order‑writing rules. Medication ordering: Write orders according to approval from the Medical Executive Committee and board of trustees; provide verbal orders from the supervising physician; may give verbal orders in emergencies. Safety: Attend all required safety education; respond accurately to safety questions; operate equipment safely; maintain work area; demonstrate proper body mechanics; if manager/leader, ensure department staff safety. Work Schedule 3–13 hour shifts per week, including 3 12 hour shifts per week. This is a nocturnist position 6 p‑6 a.
