Student Assistance Counselor

Job Summary: The focus of this program is to present/provide evidenced based programing (EBP’s) in classrooms, groups and/or individual sessions with students/youth at risk for substance abuse in school-based settings in Oswego County Schools and with community-based agencies in Oswego County. Schools interested in this service contract out for days of service in their building. The Student Assistance Counselor meets with school staff to implement EBP’s in classrooms, garner referrals and assesses student for individual or group work. Counselors often are asked to present information to school staff on drug/alcohol issues and often visit health or other classes to orient students about this service that is available to them. Counselors are required to travel to various school sites in Oswego County. The Student Assistance Counselor will also work with community-based organizations throughout Oswego County to deliver youth, family, and community services. Dimensions of Job: Meet with school/agency staff to incorporate EBP’s in classrooms/programs, responsible for referral of students/youth in determining those in need of services, as well as to inform staff of confidentiality, child abuse reporting and other crisis related issues. Work out of different school/community-based sites each day, depending on schedule, "virtual/remote concerns", contracted schools and agencies. Attend trainings specific to high-risk youth and substance abuse and utilize training materials back at the school site/ make it available to other staff. Meet with students/youth and admit students/youth in need of prevention counseling; run groups for students with like needs for psycho-education skills building. Keep guidance or other school/agency staff and supervisor aware of any crisis that may develop. Making referrals out of program, when appropriate Complete OASAS and in-house paperwork daily, complete statistics using NYS WITNYS to assist with data/record keeping and outcomes. Keep supervisor updated of any problems/concerns related to school and community-based sites (school, agency, administration, teacher, parent, space provided or other program problem). Attend agency and Prevention Staff meetings as required. Provide a social media presence for Prevention utilizing various platforms including Facebook and Instagram. Develop and post on a consistent basis. All job responsibilities with be in alignment with value- based health/payment. It is the responsibility of this position to know and understand the specific implications of VBH/VBP on day-to-day duties on the job. Education and Experience: Masters’ degree in Counseling, Human Services or a related behavioral or social science field preferred. Related experience will be taken into consideration. CASAC, CPS, CPP or experience in substance abuse clinic preferred. Related experience will be taken into consideration. Special Requirements: Valid driver’s license.
