Senior Researcher -- Organic Chemist

Organic ChemistCorporate Innovation CenterPOSITION DESCRIPTIONA senior position in the Product Stewardship Lab at USG’s Corporate Innovation Center in Libertyville, IL to drive initiatives in the areas of building materials and product safety. The position will report directly to the Laboratory Director and work alongside technical staff specialized in fields of analytical, toxicology, and regulatory affairs, as well as other labs and functions.We seek an experienced leader and subject matter expert in Organic Chemistry to drive measurable, high-impact projects for USG through fundamental research and material analysis. The candidate will develop and execute research initiatives, propose original concepts for the Product Stewardship Lab, and provide technical leadership on raw materials, formulations, and their impact on product performance, safety, and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include characterizing raw materials and finished products, conducting chemical and compliance testing, and developing innovative solutions to support business strategies.Experience with chemical processes, synthesis, analytical techniques, and problem solving is essential. An ideal candidate must be willing to work independently, possess good time management skills, and have demonstrated leadership with an ability to influence. Group meetings are common to discuss issues internally and with Product Safety, Manufacturing, Legal, Sales and Marketing.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES· Adheres to all safety and environmental regulations of the corporation. Contributes to a safe work environment and participates in safety initiatives.· Drives key functional initiatives through chemical principles and applications to support innovation and business strategies.· Supervise and conduct laboratory evaluations of raw materials and finished products in support of functional initiatives, businesses, and operations. Knowledge of instruments such as FTIR/NIR, gas and/or liquid chromatography, UV-Vis, and other techniques for organic analysis related to polymers, surfactants, and volatile compounds.· Gain in-depth understanding of raw materials used in the business, their chemistries and impacts on product performance and health and safety.· Maintain equipment and instruments in safe and good working order. Contribute to lab housekeeping programs.· Communicates clearly both verbal and written and maintains accurate and up to date documentation of work activities.QUALIFICATIONS· PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related technical field. MS with relevant practical experience (5+ yrs) also considered.· Prefer industry experience with application of chemical principles and research to innovate and solve real world problems.· Proven skills in Analytical Chemistry with concentration in organic analysis· Ability to interpret data from advanced analytical techniques to solve problems and create customer-centric and practical solutions. Knowledge of emissions analysis and air permitting requirements such as EPA regulations is a plus.· Passion to work in the building industry, innovate and contribute new ideas for safer products and environments.· Ability to work independently and in a team environment.· Some travel may be needed.Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.USG employees enjoy a number of benefit options for themselves and their families.
