Field Service Tech Opportunity

We're supporting a growing electrical apparatus manufacturer with a Field Service Tech opportunity. This direct hire position will be responsible for travel to various client sites throughout the US to perform installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance on power control and distribution equipment.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, technically capable, safety-focused, and able to work independently in demanding field environments including industrial facilities, data centers, utility sites, energy facilities, and mission-critical infrastructure projects. Field Service tech must be willing to travel 40-60% of the time currently, and work in the Tomball shop the rest of the time. Travel expectations may increase or decrease at times due to work load. NETA certification, either current or previous, is highly desired.

Position Summary

The Service Technician is responsible for supporting the installation, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, repair, and field service of medium- and low-voltage electrical power distribution systems and related infrastructure.

This role serves as a key field representative for our client and plays a critical role in ensuring electrical systems are installed, tested, commissioned, and operating safely and reliably in accordance with project specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards.

This position requires strong electrical troubleshooting skills, mechanical aptitude, professionalism with customers, and the ability to work collaboratively with engineering, production, project management, and commissioning teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. Installation & Field Support

• Support installation and field integration of medium- and low-voltage electrical equipment and systems
• Assist with switchgear lineup assembly, bus connections, cable terminations, control wiring verification, and equipment modifications
• Support installation activities for switchgear, transformers, motor controls, UPS systems, protection relays, power distribution equipment, and associated electrical infrastructure
• Coordinate with project managers, engineering teams, and customers during field activities
• Verify field installations align with approved drawings, specifications, and project requirements
• Identify installation deficiencies and support corrective actions

2. Startup & Commissioning

• Perform startup and commissioning support for electrical distribution systems
• Execute commissioning procedures, equipment checks, and operational testing
• Verify proper operation of electrical and control systems
• Assist with energization activities and startup sequencing
• Support relay testing, functional checks, and control verification
• Validate field wiring, CT/PT polarity, interlocks, alarms, indications, and control functions
• Support acceptance testing and customer witness testing activities
• Document commissioning results and deficiencies

3. Troubleshooting & Repairs

• Diagnose electrical, mechanical, and control system issues in the field
• Perform root cause analysis on equipment failures and operational issues
• Troubleshoot power distribution systems, control circuits, relays, breakers, transformers, and associated components
• Perform field repairs, modifications, adjustments, and corrective actions
• Coordinate with engineering and production teams to resolve technical issues
• Escalate critical technical concerns when required
• Support emergency service calls and urgent customer issues when necessary

4. Testing & Validation

• Perform electrical and functional testing of equipment and systems
• Verify proper equipment performance against project specifications and design intent
• Support insulation resistance testing, continuity checks, control verification, and operational testing
• Assist with relay verification and protection system checks
• Verify system alarms, metering, communications, and control functionality
• Ensure quality and workmanship standards are maintained during field execution

5. Customer & Field Coordination

• Serve as a professional field representative of company
• Maintain strong communication with customers, contractors, vendors, and field personnel
• Provide field updates, issue reporting, and status communication to internal teams and customers
• Support customer training and operational turnover activities
• Maintain professionalism in high-pressure and fast-paced environments
• Build customer confidence through responsiveness, technical capability, and execution quality

6. Documentation & Reporting

• Complete field service reports, commissioning reports, punch lists, and daily updates
• Document deficiencies, repairs, testing results, and corrective actions
• Capture field redlines and provide feedback to engineering and project teams
• Maintain accurate records of field activities, equipment status, and service work performed
• Support closeout documentation and final turnover packages

7. Continuous Improvement

• Identify recurring field issues and recommend improvements
• Provide feedback to engineering, quality, and production teams to improve product reliability and field execution
• Support development and improvement of commissioning procedures, service standards, and field processes
• Participate in lessons learned and operational improvement initiatives

Qualifications

Required

• 3+ years of electrical field service, commissioning, industrial maintenance, or related experience
• Strong electrical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams
• Familiarity with electrical distribution equipment and industrial power systems
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Willingness to travel frequently and work extended hours when required
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer sites

Preferred

• Experience with medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear systems
• Experience with power distribution systems, transformers, generators, or E-House systems
• Familiarity with protective relays, controls, and commissioning activities
• Experience supporting data center, utility, industrial, or oil & gas projects
• NETA, NFPA 70E, OSHA, or electrical safety training
• Experience using electrical testing equipment and commissioning tools
