Senior Project Superintendent – Water/WastewaterWharton-Smith, Inc., a highly regarded General Contractor throughout the Southeast, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Project Superintendent – Water/Wastewater. We are currently seeking someone who is willing to work in Tampa, FL.The Senior Project Superintendent is responsible for overseeing larger, more complex construction projects and supervising all field operations on assigned projects. This position provides overall leadership for onsite field administration, supervision, and technical management of all construction activities, including oversight of Assistant Superintendents, Project Superintendents, Field Engineers, Foremen, subcontractors, and other construction-related personnel.The Senior Project Superintendent serves as a senior field leader responsible for driving project execution, maintaining client relationships, mentoring field leadership teams, supporting company initiatives, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.Responsibilities:Leadership & Operational OversightProvide leadership and operational oversight for multiple projects or large, highly complex projects.Support and mentor Project Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Field Engineers, and Foremen.Assist executive leadership with strategic planning and operational improvements.Support field leadership teams in resolving complex construction, manpower, scheduling, and safety issues.Monitor project performance, productivity, quality, manpower utilization, and schedule compliance across assigned projects.Participate in staffing, succession planning, hiring decisions, and leadership development initiatives.Promote company culture, operational consistency, and continuous improvement initiatives.Participate in company-wide operational meetings and leadership planning sessions.Assist with the development and implementation of field standards, procedures, and best practices.Assist HR/Recruiting with staffing needs on project.Mentoring/Development and Succession Planning.Project Oversight & Construction ManagementOversee construction execution on large or high-profile projects to ensure compliance with company standards, project specifications, budgets, and schedules.Provide guidance and support regarding construction means, methods, sequencing, logistics, and constructability.Review and support project schedules, manpower plans, production goals, and recovery plans.Assist project teams with identifying and resolving critical path issues and field conflicts.Participate in pre-construction planning, constructability reviews, and project startup activities.Support Project Managers and field teams during critical project phases, inspections, commissioning activities, and project closeout.Monitor quality control processes and participate in project quality reviews.Review project documentation including daily reports, production tracking, safety documentation, and field coordination reports.Support coordination with clients, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, and vendors on critical project matters.Assist with identifying and pursuing new project opportunities with existing clients.Safety LeadershipPromote and enforce company safety culture and zero-incident expectations across all assigned projects.Support field leadership teams in implementing company safety policies and procedures.Participate in project safety audits, inspections, and incident reviews.Assist with high-risk activity planning and safety coordination.Ensure projects always maintain OSHA compliance and readiness for inspections.Mentor field leadership teams regarding accident prevention, hazard recognition, and safety accountability.Support implementation of Stretch and Flex programs and other company safety initiatives.Workforce DevelopmentMentor and develop field leadership personnel across the company.Assist with evaluating field employee performance and advancement opportunities.Participate in leadership development and craft training programs.Identify training needs and coordinate development opportunities with company leadership.Support onboarding and integration of new field personnel.Production Planning & Operational SupportSupport labor forecasting and manpower planning across assigned projects.Review production plans, labor budgets, and field productivity metrics.Assist project teams with schedule recovery planning and operational improvements.Participate in production planning meetings and operational review sessions.Support implementation of company production planning systems and field reporting standards.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and extensive field leadership experience will be considered.Minimum of 15 years of construction-related or construction management experience, with demonstrated success managing large-scale, complex, multimillion-dollar projects.Minimum of 5 years of senior field leadership or Project Superintendent experience preferred.Experience overseeing multiple projects and mentoring field leadership teams preferred.Proven ability to lead large field teams, develop emerging leaders, and establish clear operational expectations.Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills.Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with executive leadership, Project Managers, Superintendents, clients, subcontractors, engineers, inspectors, and field personnel.Demonstrated ability to lead difficult conversations, resolve conflicts, and address operational challenges effectively.Strong decision-making, organizational, planning, and operational management skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities and provide leadership and support across several projects simultaneously.Current Competent Person training and certifications in:Trenching and excavationScaffoldingRiggingConfined spaceFall protectionCurrent OSHA 30-Hour certification required.Current First Aid & CPR certification required.Required training in Silica Safety, Risk Management, and Accident Investigation.Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office products.Ability to work safely and effectively on active construction job sites and in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, noise, and dust.Ability to work flexible and extended hours as required by project needs, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.Ability to operate foot and hand controls for extended periods and safely handle heavy or bulky materials.Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds and meet all physical requirements necessary to safely perform essential job functions.Ability to communicate clearly, follow written and verbal instructions, recognize safety warnings and alarms, and maintain balance and coordination on uneven surfaces, ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and similar structures.Ability and willingness to travel occasionally throughout Wharton-Smith territories.Must be available to work full-time in an exempt position, generally Monday through Friday, with additional hours as required by project needs.Equal Opportunity Employer/Veterans/DisabilityWharton-Smith provides equal opportunity to qualified disabled veterans, Pre-JVA special disabled veterans and individuals with disabilities to online application systems by making reasonable accommodation to ensure equal access for submitting to job openings.
