Job Description
ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse Supervisor (ICU), the Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for acutely and critically ill patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. The Registered Nurse will follow the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Additionally, this role involves providing leadership for ancillary staff as a team leader and preceptor, while being an active member of the department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of nursing staff.
• Assist nursing staff in creating and maintaining a safe environment for patients.
• Develop individualized patient care plans and participate in patient care planning to assess and evaluate patient needs.
• Document observations, nursing interventions, and therapeutic measures in an accurate and efficient manner.
• Maintain expertise in critical care nursing through continuing education and participation in staff meetings and workshops.
• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and respond promptly in emergency situations.
• Monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients, interpreting and recording electronic displays, including cardiac rhythms.
• Delegate tasks and supervise licensed and unlicensed providers as appropriate.
• Serve as charge nurse when assigned, providing guidance and direction to nursing personnel.
• Ensure adherence to infection prevention standards and proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Contribute to patient experience by providing high-quality, patient-centered care.
• Collaborate with medical and nursing staff to foster a positive working relationship within the department.
• Assist with procedures and transportation throughout the facility as needed.
• Focus on patient safety and quality of care through effective nursing interventions and evaluations of patient outcomes.
• Administer medications per providers' orders or established protocols.
• Respond appropriately to emergency situations and participate in code blue and rapid response calls.
• Identify and communicate opportunities for process improvement within the clinical area.
• Provide Navajo interpretation for patients as needed.
• Adapt to changes in the work area, including floating to different care areas to meet patient needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications

• Knowledge of relevant tribal, state, federal, and local laws and regulations.
• Understanding of The Joint Commission (TJC) standards.
• Familiarity with nursing standards of care as per the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and TJC.
• Knowledge of infection control and prevention practices in a healthcare setting.
• Ability to utilize critical thinking skills and function independently or within a team.
• Effective communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Proficient in operating computers and software, including Microsoft applications.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The employee frequently requires standing, walking, crouching, and kneeling, with occasional sitting. Duties involve lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. Work is primarily performed in a hospital setting, with exposure to potentially hazardous materials and situations necessitating safety precautions. The role may involve evening or weekend work, along with extended hours and irregular shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate degree in Nursing; BSN strongly preferred.
• Two years of ICU clinical experience required.
• Specialty certifications: CCRN; TNCC recommended.
• Valid unrestricted nursing license from the state of Arizona or another compact state.
• Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required.
• NRP certification required within six months of hire.
• Successfully pass a background investigation and Employee Health requirements.
