A Brief Overview The Pharmacy Supply Chain Pharmacist is responsible for the strategic procurement, sourcing, contracting support, inventory optimization, and medication supply continuity programs across Stanford Health Care. This role serves as the clinical and operational liaison between Pharmacy Supply Chain, Pharmacy Operations, Clinical Pharmacy Services, Group Purchasing organizations (GPOs), wholesalers, manufacturers and other healthcare stakeholders to ensure a reliable, compliant, and cost-effective medication supply. The Pharmacy Supply Chain Pharmacist develops and implements procurement strategies, manages medication shortages and allocations, evaluates market opportunities, supports formulary implementation, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements while minimizing disruptions to patient care. This position also serves as a key contributor in enterprise drug shortage management by proactively identifying supply risks, developing mitigation strategies, coordinating multidisciplinary response efforts, and implementing resilient procurement practices to minimize disruptions to patient care. Locations Stanford Health Care What you will do Execute medication procurement strategies to support uninterrupted patient care across inpatient, outpatient, infusion, specialty, and procedural care settings. Provide oversight, direction, and coordination of Pharmacy Supply Chain Technicians, including work prioritization, training, competency assessment, workflow optimization, and support for daily procurement, inventory management, shortage mitigation, and medication distribution activities. Manage pharmaceutical sourcing activities, including primary wholesaler procurement, direct purchasing agreements, specialty distribution channels, and manufacturer relationships. Lead enterprise drug shortage management activities, including monitoring, mitigation planning, and stakeholder communications. Monitor and evaluate medication shortages, allocations, recalls, and supply disruptions through wholesalers, manufacturers, GPOs, and industry resources. Assess clinical and operational impacts of shortages and collaborate with pharmacy leaders to implement mitigation strategies and therapeutic alternatives. Coordinate multidisciplinary responses to critical drug shortages to ensure continuity of patient care. Maintain shortage tracking tools, dashboards, and executive reports. Implement proactive supply resiliency strategies, including inventory optimization, buffer stock programs, secondary sourcing, and direct manufacturer procurement. Support Drug Shortage Management Committee initiatives, emergency preparedness efforts, and continuous improvement activities related to medication supply continuity. Collaborate with pharmacy buyers and inventory specialists to optimize inventory levels, safety stock strategies, and purchasing practices. Analyze pharmaceutical spend, utilization trends, contract performance, and market dynamics to identify cost-saving opportunities. Support formulary additions, product conversions, biosimilars, generics, and medication standardization initiatives. Participate in group purchasing organization (GPO) activities and evaluate contracting opportunities to maximize financial and operational value. Serve as a subject matter expert for pharmaceutical procurement, manufacturer programs, allocation management, and supply resiliency strategies. Partner with Finance, Pharmacy Leadership, and Supply Chain teams to support budget planning and expense management initiatives. Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to medication procurement, storage, distribution, and supply chain security. Support Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) compliance initiatives and pharmaceutical pedigree requirements. Support implementation and optimization of pharmacy inventory management systems, ERP platforms, and procurement technologies. Develop, monitor, and report key performance indicators related to medication availability, procurement savings, inventory turns, shortage mitigation, and contract compliance. Establish and maintain productive relationships with wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, and industry partners. Provide education and guidance to pharmacy staff regarding procurement practices, product availability, and supply disruptions. Participate in continuous quality improvement programs designed to improve medication access, operational efficiency, and financial stewardship. Participate in multidisciplinary committees, projects, and process improvement initiatives related to medication supply chain management. Perform other duties as assigned. Education Qualifications Bachelor degree (BS) in pharmacy or Doctorate of Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy required. Completion of PGY1 Pharmacy Residency or equivalent pharmacy procurement, supply chain, or operational experience preferred. Experience Qualifications Three (3) years of progressively responsible pharmacy experience required. Experience working within an integrated healthcare system, academic medical center, or large health system preferred. Experience with medication procurement, inventory management, pharmacy operations, supply chain management, or drug shortage mitigation preferred. Additional preferred experience includes supporting pharmaceutical contracting, value analysis, emergency preparedness, supply resiliency, pharmacy procurement in an academic medical center or integrated delivery network, and inventory management systems. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of medication distribution systems in acute care, ambulatory care, infusion, and specialty pharmacy environments. Knowledge of federal and state laws governing pharmacy purchasing and medication distribution. Ability to prioritize competing operational demands in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively collaborate with clinical, operational, financial, and executive stakeholders. Ability to use pharmacy inventory management systems, ERP systems, procurement platforms, and Microsoft Office applications. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical procurement practices and healthcare supply chain operations. Knowledge of pharmaceutical contracting, GPO agreements, wholesaler programs, and manufacturer distribution models. Strong financial acumen with the ability to interpret purchasing, utilization, and expense data. Knowledge of DSCSA requirements and pharmaceutical supply chain security standards. Knowledge of drug shortage management methodologies and supply continuity planning. Knowledge of pharmaceutical market intelligence tools, shortage management software, and analytics platforms. Knowledge of 340B program operations. Licenses and Certifications CA Board of Pharmacy License - Registered Pharmacist required. Board Certification (BCPS, BCSCP, or equivalent) preferred.
