Supervise the Dietitians across the consortium for SEARHC. Provide medical nutrition therapy for patients of all ages and a variety of medical diagnoses. Support staff and have diabetes knowledge. Plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates the work of Dietitians, and other professional, paraprofessional, and support staff. Directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for assigned functions, services, and activities; assigns work activities and projects; monitors workflow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures; meets with staff to identify and resolve problems; ensures work is performed accurately and that timelines are met; ensures compliance with established policies, procedures, and related regulations.
Manages budgets for all aspects of Nutrition Services with SEARHC. Must translate complex regulations from the Joint Commission (TJC) and state/federal standards into everyday practice. The most difficult aspect of this translation is the potential for a difference in interpretation which could lead to a citation or error. Oversees the contract relationship with Aramark and liaison for them and the consortium. Works collaboratively with Aramark Dietitian, Aramark Contract at Sitka and Wrangell facilities (including hospital and LTC). Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. Includes Aramark in Consortium activities, meetings, decisions with Dietitians and Clinical Nutrition Services.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job
- Supervise all Dietitians throughout the Consortium. Will provide all performance evaluations, reviews, reports of services. Support our department grant (SDPI) by providing direction, schedules, budgets, pertinent to the work. Use data from multiple sources (including electronic health records) to identify underserved populations in the communities SEARHC serves, and outreach to connect them to prevention, screening, and primary care services. Services may be in-person or virtual. Work with Marketing to develop appropriate social media or outreach materials as needed.
- Keeps administration updated and informed on departmental activities, prepares reports and presentations as requested. Manages program operations within following guidelines: department's policies and procedures, SEARHC's strategic plan, mission, and vision statements, TJC (The Joint Commission), state and/or federal standards, and coordination with other programs and/or services.
- Responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and review of medical nutrition's overall effectiveness and efficiency in meeting both short- and long-range goals.
- Oversight of training the community partners in delivering health education/intervention programs in their communities. These training opportunities may include but are not limited to online health programs, multi-session classes, and other duties as assigned.
- Select, implement, and evaluate evidence-based strategies to effectively improve health status of individuals, small groups and/or communities per the work plan(s) working across the SEARHC region and with multiple SEARHC staff across Divisions.
- Oversees all food service operations. Supervises and includes Aramark Dietitian, Aramark Contract at Sitka and Wrangell facilities (including hospital and LTC). Contributes to the development of processes and procedures.
- Provide medical nutrition therapy as needed for patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and prediabetes. Will provide nutrition assessments, counseling, and medical nutrition therapy for patients of all ages and with a wide variety of medical diagnoses. Document each assessment, counseling, and patient education session using the PCC. Cerner is the EHR for our patients and will need to learn/know. Keep the nutrition program in compliance with Joint Commission standards and requirements.
- Serve as member of Diabetes team and other teams as assigned. Actively participates in the interdisciplinary Case Management Team. Designs and implements a quality assurance nutritional program and gives feedback to the providers and medical director.
- Functions as a working clinical manager with such duties as serves as a liaison with medical and nursing staffs, and diabetes educator to meet and monitor workload; supervision of patient services dietitians to maximize service delivery for nutritional screening, assessment, education, and care plans.
- Mentors/proctors AI/AN (American Indian/Alaska Native) students in programs that lead to national registration by working closely with University of Alaska Anchorage Dietetics Internship program.
- Other duties as assigned by the Division Director.
Additional Details:
Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
- Bachelor's degree from school whose Nutrition, Dietetic, Institutional Management Programs is accredited by Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA)
- Completion of an approved dietetic internship program
- Master's Degree in Nutrition or related field preferred
- Dietetic Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
- Licensure from the State of Alaska, Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing required within 6 months of hire.
- Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) preferred.
- Basic Life Support
- Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
- Manager Competency required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
Experience Required
- 4 years of experience as a clinical dietitian (minimum)
- Master's Degree can substitute for 2 years of experience
Knowledge of
- Advanced level of medical nutrition therapy and clinical knowledge
- Working level of computer knowledge
- Human behavior and techniques for effective behavior change
- Supervision skills in management
- Principles and practices of supervision, discipline, leadership, mentoring and training
- Principles, techniques and practices of nutrition education and counseling
- Educational methods and skills in training others in the principles of nutrition
- Current sociological and economic problems pertaining to community health nutrition
- Food requirements of various age groups, senior citizens, expectant mothers, poor persons, and others with specialized food or feeding requirements
- Principles of food safety and sanitation practices
Skills in
- Clinical nutrition services: screening, assessment, diagnosis, education, intervention, monitoring and evaluation using the Nutrition Care Process for patients at all levels of care and age
- CERNER our EHR system
- Education, counseling, and teaching
- Competent using basic computer software: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Resource Patient Management System (RPMS) or other electronic medical record charting software.
Ability to
- Work with other staff members: the Hospital Nutrition staff as well as other healthcare professionals: physicians, nurses, patient representatives, and other diabetes team members.
- Function independently on assigned patient care units.
- Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form to patients, public, hospital and medical staff, and physicians.
- Select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
- Supervise the work of subordinate staff through training, coaching, and mentoring.
- Provide nutrition consultation to others, including health care professionals.
- Analyze diets for nutritional adequacy.
- Communicate and establish effective working relationships with co-workers, clients, their families, senior citizens, and the public, including individuals from a variety of social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
- Prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports.
- Analyze situations accurately and implement an effective course of action.
