Department Summary The UCLA Voting Rights Project (VRP) is an interdisciplinary academic research center aimed at ensuring equitable and accessible voting for all Americans.The UCLA VRP was founded by Dr. Matt A. Barreto (Division of Social Sciences, Luskin School of Public Affairs) and Chad W. Dunn (School of Law, Luskin School of Public Affairs) to address three significant and overlooked gaps in the voting rights field: training newly graduated lawyers and social science expert witnesses; developing new legal and social science theories for voting rights cases; and advancing voting rights through national and local public policy. The mission of the UCLA VRP is to provide hands‑on clinical training to future lawyers, public policy officials, and social scientists while calling attention to the voting rights obstacles faced today in underserved towns, cities, and counties across the country. In the past six years, we have trained hundreds of students through our course and clinic, with more than 75% being students of color.The UCLA VRP focuses on three action areas: - Inter‑disciplinary and hands‑on clinical education with students from UCLA School of Law, the Luskin School of Public Policy and Division of Social Sciences; - Impact litigation and legal advocacy focused on creating representation and access to voting for communities in underserved towns, cities, school boards, and counties; and - Academic research on voting issues such as voting patterns, voter turnout, and language justice that can be directly translated into policy advocacy and policy implementation.The focus on local, historically and routinely disenfranchised communities as the first stop for voting rights litigation marks the UCLA VRP as a unique public‑service project. Position Summary The UCLA Voting Rights Project (VRP) seeks a Research Data Analyst to support research projects focused on voting rights, elections, and democracy. Under the direction of the Data Scientist, Faculty Director, and research team, the incumbent will assist with research activities involving demographic, electoral, and geographic data to support policy research, public reports, and other project deliverables. Responsibilities include supporting data acquisition, organization, cleaning, coding, analysis, and visualization using census, voter file, precinct election, and GIS data. The incumbent will assist with research design, prepare research summaries and reports, participate in project meetings, and collaborate with the research team to support ongoing research initiatives and organizational partners. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Strong skills in R, GIS and data visualization. (Required) Experience downloading and cleaning data from Census, Election Administration and related publicly accessible datasets. (Required) Attention to detail and ability to organize and document workflow. (Required) Ability to work independently and as part of a team. (Required) Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate and present technical results. (Required) Substantive knowledge or experience in voting rights. (Preferred) Knowledge of quantitative research methods including machine learning and statistics. Knowledge of causal inference methods a plus. (Preferred) Ability to work discreetly with sensitive and confidential data. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor's Degree in computer science, political science statistics, data science or related field. (Required) Or Master's Degree in computer science, political science statistics, data science or related field.
