The RCP performs routine respiratory care procedures, varying in complexity. These include, but are not limited to preparation, administration and monitoring of medication and treatment modalities and gas therapy, ventilator support, spirometry and assistance with procedures as requested.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

·        Responsible for respiratory care and treatment of patients at facility, with particular emphasis on post-anesthesia patients.

·        Responsible for observing and implementing policies and procedures that guide the respiratory care and treatment of patients. 

·        Monitors all scheduled cases at the hospital for which respiratory care and treatment is anticipated.

·        Participates in the treatment of all patients that fall in the above criteria and coordinating such participation with all hospital clinical departments and the Director of Anesthesiology.

·        Set up and administer all routine and complex respiratory therapy procedures to patients as prescribed by a physician.  

·        Performs assessment of the patient, determining needs related to frequency and duration of treatment regimen ordered by the physician, and makes appropriate recommendations to the physician as needed.

·        Ability to work independently in the critical care environment with advanced airways, respiratory bedside procedures and rapidly changing emergency environments.

·        Observes the response of patients to therapy, evaluates and records in patient chart.

·        Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.

·        Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal skills to work productively with patients, families, staff and coworkers. 

·         Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.

·        Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day to day activities of the position.

·        Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (Education, Experience and Certifications)

Education:  Must have completed a two- or four-year accredited program as a RCP.

Certification, Licensure:   Current licensure as a RCP from the State of Texas is required.  Prefer RRT.  BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association are required.  PALS certification preferred.

Education, Knowledge, Training:  Two (2) years hospital related experience required.

KNOWLEDGE, Skills And Abilities

Excellent organizational skills with ability to work in high stress environment.  Excellent communication skills required.  Must possess knowledge of Microsoft Office and hospital related software.

Physical Requirements

Position regularly requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.  Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Frequently lifts and/or moves up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to twenty-five (25) pounds.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures

May be exposed to some compounds which have been classified as ‘hazardous’ by OSHA.  Hazards are minimal if safety precautions are utilized.  This position may occasionally require the use of personal protective equipment during various tasks/activities.  Personal protective equipment includes, but is not limited to gloves, masks, safety glasses and gowns.

OSHA TASK CATEGORY I: The normal procedure involves potential exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue. Universal Precautions with patients should be adhered to in the unlikely event of accidental exposure with ready access to first aid. Protective devices should be worn by the employee when performing tasks that may cause exposure.
