General Maintenance Worker

Under general supervision, the General Maintenance Worker performs general maintenance and repair of equipment and buildings requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in such trades as painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work. Work involves a variety of duties other than those of skilled craft workers, with attention to knowing and using safe work practices.

Typical duties include: replacing electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors; using plaster or compound to patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings; repairing or replacing sinks, water coolers, and toilets; painting structures and equipment; repairing or replacing concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks; replacing damaged paneling and floor tiles; hanging doors and installing door locks; replacing broken window panes; performing general maintenance on equipment and machinery; and frequent travel between facilities.

Minimum qualifications include: one year of work experience in general building maintenance, or demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools, and knowledge of and ability to properly use specialized equipment; ability to manage material resources and time; ability to work safely; ability to follow directions, instructions, structured process and procedures, and to complete tasks; customer service skills; communication skills; flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities; demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills; ability to travel to various facilities, and to work independently and as a team.

Education requirements include a high school diploma or GED and technical or other training.

Physical requirements include the ability to maneuver to and around equipment, stand and walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach, lift boxes or equipment up to 50 pounds, and climb ladders or step stools.

Work environment includes office, shop, warehouse, or outdoor environment, and may require driving to and from worksite locations. Employees may be exposed to hazardous and/or toxic substances, electrical shock, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.
