Duration: 4 Months to start with

• Must have a PhD in Linguistics
• Must have near-native or native bilingual proficiency in a language other than English, more specifically a language of the following families or groups: Dravidian or Indo-Aryan. Dravidian is more of a focus and being fluent in both 1 Dravidian and 1 Indo-Aryan language is the best profile.

We are seeking a highly motivated Linguist to support advanced AI and language research initiatives. This role combines linguistic expertise, multilingual analysis, research methodology, and data-driven evaluation of AI-generated content. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in theoretical linguistics, experience working with language data, and proficiency in Python.

This position is well suited for early-career researchers looking to apply their linguistic expertise to large-scale multilingual AI systems.

Basic Qualifications

• PhD in Linguistics required (Theoretical Linguistics strongly preferred).
• 0 to 3 years of professional or academic experience.
• Near-native or native bilingual proficiency in at least one Dravidian or Indo-Aryan language.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Python.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and handle ambiguous research requests.
• Strong analytical and pattern-recognition skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Fluency in both a Dravidian and an Indo-Aryan language.
• Experience with corpus linguistics, language documentation, or fieldwork.
• Experience collaborating with machine learning, NLP, or data science teams.
• Familiarity with SQL.
• Experience contributing to academic research publications.
• Knowledge of language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, phonology, and writing systems.
• Experience creating or maintaining lexical resources such as dictionaries or terminology databases.
• Familiarity with basic Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques.

Responsibilities

• Perform linguistic analysis on large multilingual datasets.
• Conduct linguistic error analysis of machine-generated translations and identify recurring error patterns.
• Develop, maintain, and revise annotation guidelines for language-related projects.
• Conduct typological, sociolinguistic, and comparative language research.
• Evaluate language quality, translation accuracy, and linguistic consistency across languages.
• Research and summarize findings from academic literature related to language technologies.
• Collaborate with linguists, engineers, researchers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Support responsible AI initiatives through analysis of language bias, toxicity, and cultural considerations.
• Create reports and communicate research findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Collaborate with native speakers and language experts across various language groups.
