Attorney IV

Job Description and Duties

The Attorney IV, under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel, performs the most sensitive and complex legal work consistently with favorable results. As lead Investigations Counsel, this position provides legal analysis, advice, and representation on a wide range of complex and sensitive legal matters affecting the policies and administration of the California Highway Patrol and represents the Department before the State Personnel Board (SPB). This position litigates adverse actions before the SPB, representing the Department's interests. Researches federal, state, case and civil service law, SPB precedential decisions, and rules. Negotiates settlements with favorable results and prepares settlement agreements.

Working Conditions

Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, in office. Some travel may be required.

• The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Extensive litigation experience before the State Personnel Board.
• Extensive specific knowledge related to internal and external criminal and personnel investigations.
• Extensive knowledge related to peace officer rights and responsibilities, equal employment opportunity, whistleblower, and retaliation actions.
