Health Unit Coordinator - Intermediate Neurosciences & ENT Unit

Health Unit Coordinator (Intermediate Neurosciences and Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery Unit) This position is 36 hours per week, rotating shifts days and nights (7am - 7:30pm, 7pm - 7:30am) with weekend and holiday rotation. It qualifies for an extensive benefit package including PTO accrued based on worked hours. The new 18‑bed Intermediate Neurosciences and Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery (ENT) Unit is efficiently designed to provide high quality, specialized and compassionate care. Staff are challenged by the pace and variety of patients. Teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration are hallmarks while delivering expert "Carolina Care" to patients and families 24/7. Summary Provides clerical and administrative support to the nursing staff of an inpatient unit, performing all duties in accordance with UNC Healthcare policies and procedures under the direction of a nurse manager. Responsibilities Ensures services outlined on orders are communicated timely to appropriate staff in the unit and throughout the hospital per UNCHCS policies. Follow up according to established procedure. Transcribe physician orders by priority and type. Review orders for logic, clarity, and completeness; bring inconsistencies to clinical practitioners. Coordinate return appointments for patients. Use multiple hospital support tools (transportation‑tracking system, pager system, Intranet, tube system), clinical software, and materials such as armbands, signs, labels, MAR, Kardex, and printed requisitions. Maintains patient charts in complete and accurate universal chart order, files in appropriate sections, and ensures all forms contain correct patient identification. Process charts for admission, transfer, diagnostic/operative procedures, discharge, and death. Orders office or patient care supplies within budget constraints and maintains inventories of unit supplies and equipment. Maintain unit communications equipment (printer, mobile laptop computers, fax), conduct unit audits, safety checks, and routine maintenance of office equipment. Serve as a clerical resource and be knowledgeable about hospital policies and procedures. Keep the unit clean and orderly and perform other general office support duties as required. Supports the healthcare team with information and administrative support. Answer and direct telephone calls from visitors, staff, and patients. Respond to patients' call system. Relay messages for patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other staff from multiple departments. Maintain confidentiality of all patient information. Create and maintain electronic documents in MS Office. Other Information Education Requirements: High School diploma or GED. Licensure/Certification Requirements: No licensure or certification required. Professional Experience Requirements: One (1) year of clerical or customer service experience preferred.
