Our mission at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) is to serve, protect and advance the citizens and industries in the state with quality motor vehicle related services. We are a dynamic state agency dedicated to customer service, consumer protection and the success of motor vehicle-related industries. Investigates complaints and/or inquiries regarding business activities regulated by the Department. Work requires contact with consumers, industry executives, attorneys, governmental officials, and private entities. Work may require up to 10% travel. Employees at this level perform work independently with limited supervision and with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Any unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential duties include:

• Reviews and evaluates consumer complaints to determine if the consumer is eligible for relief under applicable state law
• Conducts investigations and/or inspections of consumer's motor vehicle documents, observations, and findings
• Evaluates complaints filed to determine applicability of regulatory statutes
• Identifies, gathers, and examines complex records necessary to complete investigations
• Prepares comprehensive investigative or inspection reports
• Maintains investigation(s) files and reports
• Conducts informal mediations between parties to settle disputes
• Coordinates with regulated businesses and consumers regarding complaints
• Answers inquiries and provides guidance to regulated businesses
• Conducts research of state and federal statutes, regulations and other issues affecting area of jurisdiction
• Maintains case files
• May be required to make public presentations to outside agencies
• May provide expert testimony in administrative hearings

• Knowledge of automotive technology and industry operations
• Analyzing and organizing technical data
• Auditing and investigative methods, practices and procedures
• Skill in conducting mediations and/or resolving issues with parties
• Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Work under limited supervision
• Evaluate, plan, organize, and conduct investigations
• Interpret and apply state and federal laws and regulations
• Conduct interviews and gather facts
• Evaluate findings from an investigation
• Prepare investigation reports

• Communicate effectively with both internal and external customers

• Understand business ethics, policies and procedures, and organizational standards
• Protect sensitive and confidential information

Minimum requirements include:

• Graduation from high school or equivalent
• College education or technical training in law enforcement, investigations or a related field may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis
• Seven years progressively responsible experience in investigative work or in the automotive industry in a technical or service field

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles is considered a qualified employer for the Department of Education's Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

A valid Class "C" driver's license is required. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within ninety (90) days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct department business.
