Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active Illinois RN license Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: General medical/surgical experience Description: The Short Stay Unit consists of 13 beds. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5. Common diagnoses include stroke, traumas, cardiac conditions, and general medicine issues such as urinary tract infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cellulitis. The unit operates in a fast-paced environment with high patient turnover. RNs are not required to titrate drips. Common respiratory equipment used includes Bi-PAP and C-PAP, which are utilized on a prn basis or at night. High flow oxygen is also available. Telemetry monitoring is conducted using Phillips Monitoring. RNs are not required to read EKG strips. There is a Charge RN available 24/7 who also takes a patient assignment. A house supervisor is present on all shifts. Patient Care Technicians are available on both day and night shifts. Job duties involve patient care, vital sign monitoring, blood glucose checks, and hourly rounding. Weekend shifts are required with six shifts in a six-week schedule. Holiday coverage is also part of the staff requirement. There is no on-call requirement. Travelers will be the first to float to other departments as needed. Floated staff may assist in a team nursing approach when moved to higher acuity areas. There is no specific dress code for scrubs, but pediatric scrub tops should be avoided. Unit-specific orientation will be provided over one to two shifts with a preceptor. The charting system utilized in the unit is EPIC.
