Summary Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, Detroit Field Office, located in Detroit, MI. Additional selections may be made for other organizational divisions and/or units within the duty location(s) listed above. Responsibilities Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise in administration to provide advisory and technical services to management. This position starts at a salary of $98,729.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $152,625.00 (GS-13, Step 10). In this Mission Support Specialist position, you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals providing authoritativeguidance and expert technical advice in a variety of mission support functional areas. Typical work assignments include: Providing authoritative guidance, advice, and assistance on complex, sensitive issues not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods Conducting studies to develop responses to management on requirements in program operations, legislation, or agency regulations as well as studies concerning organization-wide and/or government wide management issues Evaluating pertinent legislation and new or revised policies or directives from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other agencies Reviewing newly issued regulations or directives to ascertain their impact on program areas Maintaining contact with employees within DHS and other agencies to ensure that assigned program area(s) is progressive and on solid regulatory and legal ground and provide authoritative advice and guidance at agency headquarters and in the field Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years (additional details below) All pre-employment processes will be conducted in English You may be required to pass a background investigation CBP follows the DHS Drug-Free Workplace Plan for drug testing procedures As an employee of CBP, you will be joining a workforce that is dedicated to accomplishing our mission while maintaining the trust of our Nation by strictly adhering to all government ethics standards. For local chapter contact information see Chapter Websites - National Treasury Employees Union - NTEU Qualifications Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Providing guidance on problems not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods Conducting studies involving the analysis of interrelated issues and effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity of major processes or programs Analyzing disputed, interrelated information that must be reconstructed from circumstantial evidence, requiring substantial depth of analysis over a relatively short period Responding to unanticipated changes in judicial and/or administrative law and policy as well as to conflicting goals and objectives that may result from these changes Maintaining sources of firsthand information on developments, trends, and significant policy and legal decisions in assigned specialty area(s) You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Serving as a trouble-shooter, providing authoritative guidance on problems not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods Providing advice, assistance, and guidance to supervisors, managers, and employees on complex and sensitive issues Conducting studies that analyze incomplete or conflicting data and information, unusual circumstances, variations in approach and the interpretation of considerable date to develop responses to management issues Conducting studies concerning organization-wide and/or governmentwide management issues related to evaluation of pertinent legislation and new or revised policies or directives NOTE: Your resume must explicitly indicate how you meet this requirement, otherwise you will be found ineligible. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 07/08/2026.
