The Library is part of the Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications, which engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the United Nations. The Dag Hammarskjöld Library connects Member State delegations, UN staff, researchers and world citizens with trusted information and data, facts and human knowledge about and for the UN. It provides a foundation for the facilitation, dissemination, use, access to, engagement with, and preservation of information and knowledge in support of the work, principles and mission of the United Nations. The UN Policy Pulse project, developed in collaboration with ETH Zurich, activates the United Nations' authoritative voting and deliberative datasets — curated by the Library since 1946 — through interactive search, comparison and visualization, while preserving the UN Digital Library as the source of record. Work to date has been anchored in General Assembly data; the data visualizations and user-facing features already built are designed to be extended, in future, to other UN voting datasets, including the Security Council and Human Rights Council. Under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Information and Data Analytics Unit and the Section Chief, intern responsibilities may include: - Assisting with the preparation, curation and quality control of UN voting and deliberative datasets (e.g., resolutions, voting records, speeches, representational and membership data) for use in the prototype. - Assisting with contributing to the development, testing and refinement of data visualizations and user-facing features of the UN Policy Pulse prototype. - Assisting with supporting the extension of existing features to additional UN voting datasets, including Security Council and Human Rights Council data. - Assisting with the design and testing of comparative and analytical views (e.g., country profiles, resolution-centric views, longitudinal and thematic analysis) drawing on the UN Thesaurus and related controlled vocabularies. - Assisting with supporting quality assurance and validation processes to ensure accuracy, provenance and clear citation for every data point, with persistent links back to UN Digital Library records. - Assisting with documenting workflows and contributing to materials that support the eventual handover and scaling of the prototype by the Library. - Assisting with exploring, where relevant, the responsible application of generative AI and data-analysis tools to the above tasks, consistent with DGC AI Guidelines. - Assisting with performing other related duties as required. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must have good knowledge of software applications used in data and statistical analysis and data visualisation; familiarity with generative AI tools is an asset. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship.
