Medical Assistant

Summary:
- Work Mode: General Office Environment
- Perform venipuncture and/or EKGs, check schedules, and organize patient flow.
- Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms and assist with walking, transferring, and dressing.
- Collect and process specimens and point of care testing; prepare for exams.
- Assist physicians with various procedures and take vital signs.
- Relay instructions to patients and families; answer calls and provide pertinent information.
- Send and receive patient medical records; obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
- Manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately using EMR systems or manually.
- Enter orders into the EMR system or prepare prescription refill requests for physician review.
- Inventory, order, or re-stock medical supplies as needed.
- Set up examination rooms and instruments in accordance with sterilization techniques.
- Maintain logging systems for refrigeration of medications, point of care testing, and sterilization processes.
- Check expiration dates on medications and medical supplies, disposing of them appropriately.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures.
- Comply with personal protective equipment requirements for protection against exposure to hazardous substances.
- Assist in the maintenance of medical charts, including filing and organizing test results and forms.
- Schedule surgeries/procedures and verify times with patients; prepare charts and consent forms.
- Perform proficient phlebotomy duties as required.
- Schedule and register patient appointments; update patient demographic and insurance information.
- Maintain, adjust, and confirm patient office schedules.
- Verify and update insurance information using internal or web sources.
- Perform and verify pre-certification for procedures as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Ability to communicate effectively with multicultural and language-deficit patients.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent telephone etiquette.
- Proficient in medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines.
- Knowledge of electronic medical record or billing systems preferred, but not required.
- Ability to adapt to a growing and changing environment.
