Prototype Tool and Die Machinist

Position Summary Prototype Tool and Die Machinist for the Satellite Systems Team of the Space and Launch Division at Boeing Defense, Space and Security. Location: El Segundo, CA. The role is 100% onsite and managed under the company's collective bargaining agreement as an hourly position. Responsibilities Plan, set up, and operate all types of machine tools for laboratory machining operations requiring the highest levels of skill to meet precise tolerances. Design, construct, modify, repair, and maintain high‑precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and complex electrodes for Electrical Discharge Machines. Work from verbal and written instructions, engineering drawings, and sketches to complete experimental or developmental projects. Determine electrode materials, sizes, and over‑cut/wear ratios; perform calculations with geometry and trigonometry. Layout complex parts and execute necessary calculations involving shop mathematics. Set up and operate grinding machines, mounting attachments, and conventional machine‑shop equipment to produce components or establish operating procedures. Set up and operate the electrical discharge machine, determining machine settings, condenser values, and dielectric oil flow and suction requirements. Develop operation sequences and methods with supervision and engineering personnel, addressing design problems, heat treating, material selection, and method development. Perform rework as needed and check completed parts for tolerance and quality requirements. Assist toolmakers in fabricating electrodes and fixtures. Qualifications Graduate of a Machinist Apprenticeship program or holder of a Machining Certificate. Minimum 10 years of experience setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes. Minimum 5 years of experience programming G and M codes. Preferred Qualifications Experience with EDM wire. Conventional machining experience.
