Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager – Manufacturing

Job Summary

·       The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company's Environmental, Health, and Safety programs within a unionized manufacturing environment. This position provides leadership and direction to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, corporate standards, and ISO management systems while promoting a culture of safety excellence and environmental stewardship.

·       The EHS Manager partners with plant leadership, operations teams, union representatives, contractors, and regulatory agencies to proactively reduce risk, improve performance, and drive sustainable business results. This role serves as the site's subject matter expert and primary leader for all environmental, health, safety, and compliance initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

EHS Leadership & Strategy

• Lead and manage all site Environmental, Health, and Safety programs and initiatives.
• Develop and execute strategic EHS plans that align with organizational objectives and regulatory requirements.
• Establish annual EHS goals, objectives, key performance indicators (KPIs), and improvement plans.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and guidance to site leadership teams, supervisors, and employees regarding EHS performance and compliance.
• Promote a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

EHS Management Systems & ISO Compliance

• Lead implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of EHS management systems aligned with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
• Direct internal and external audits, management reviews, corrective action programs, and certification activities.
• Ensure site adherence to corporate EHS policies and industry best practices.
• Develop and maintain EHS procedures, standards, and documentation.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Manage environmental permits, reporting requirements, inspections, and regulatory agency interactions.
• Conduct compliance assessments and risk evaluations to identify improvement opportunities.
• Develop and implement corrective and preventive action plans to address identified risks and compliance concerns.
• Serve as the site administrator and subject matter expert for contractor safety management programs.

Incident Management & Safety Programs

• Lead investigations of accidents, injuries, near misses, environmental incidents, and property damage events.
• Facilitate root cause analysis and ensure corrective actions are effectively implemented and sustained.
• Oversee Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, behavior-based safety initiatives, and safety observations.
• Drive injury prevention programs and continuous risk reduction activities.

Team Leadership & Development

• Provide direct leadership, mentoring, and development to EHS personnel and cross-functional safety teams.
• Build organizational capability through coaching, training, and professional development initiatives.
• Establish accountability for EHS performance across all departments.
• Collaborate with managers and supervisors to achieve safety, environmental, and operational objectives.

Training & Employee Engagement

• Develop and oversee comprehensive EHS training programs for employees, supervisors, contractors, and visitors.
• Ensure compliance with required training and qualification programs.
• Monitor training effectiveness and implement improvements as needed.
• Promote employee involvement through safety committees, engagement initiatives, and recognition programs.

Union & Labor Relations Collaboration

• Partner with union leadership and labor-management committees to address EHS concerns and drive continuous improvement.
• Ensure EHS programs and processes are implemented consistently with collective bargaining agreements.
• Facilitate safety committee meetings and collaborative problem-solving efforts.

Environmental Management & Sustainability

• Manage environmental compliance programs, including waste management, air emissions, water compliance, and pollution prevention initiatives.
• Support corporate sustainability goals and environmental performance objectives.
• Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and improve resource utilization.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

• Prepare and present EHS performance reports, trends, metrics, and compliance updates to senior leadership.
• Utilize data analytics and leading indicators to drive proactive risk management.
• Benchmark best practices and implement continuous improvement initiatives across the operation.

Education

• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
• Preferred Certifications: CSP, ASP, CIH, OHST, CHMM, ISO 14001
