Job Summary As a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, medical social workers provide psychosocial interventions to patients and families in any department of the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. Work addresses a variety of biopsychosocial issues and includes assessment of social needs related to health status, development of treatment plans, advocacy within the organization and community, counseling, referrals, and practical assistance to achieve desired outcomes. Medical social workers also provide consultation, orientation, and training to staff on the effects of biopsychosocial, cultural, and economic issues on patient care and advocate for social work core values and ethics within Stanford Medicine and the broader community. Essential Functions (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) Provide individual and group clinical supervision to Master’s level social workers (MSWs) and student interns, as assigned. Prepare and maintain electronic medical records in accordance with department and health system policies. Provide written and oral reports and hand‑offs. Conduct psychosocial assessments of patients and families upon admission, annually, and as clinically indicated to evaluate social, emotional, and physical needs using social work theories and techniques. Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams to devise, develop, and implement patient/family psychosocial treatment plans, coordinate referrals to specialty and social services, and record progress notes to ensure continuity of care. Assist patients and families in coping with environmental and psychological issues of illness. Manage independently assigned caseloads of varying clinical acuity. Engage in case finding for patients/families with potential psychosocial needs and attend team conferences and interdisciplinary rounds as needed. Provide supportive counseling, grief counseling, crisis intervention, and other therapeutic services to help patients and families face challenges such as coping with illness, processing medical information, and changes in functioning and care needs. Provide psychoeducation to patients and families regarding adaptation to diagnosis, illness, treatment, and prognosis. Assist patients and families in the transition from youth to adult services. Participate in quality assurance and community improvement activities related to social work services, and contribute to the review and development of written policies, procedures, or guidelines related to social work services. Responsible for assignment to California Children’s Services (CCS) clinics when required: If assigned to a CCS clinic, meet criteria for CCS paneling, including: Licensed as a clinical social worker by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; or Have a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program and five years of full‑time experience providing social work services to children with CCS‑eligible medical conditions and their families. For applicants with less than five years of experience, submit a certificate from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences verifying registration as an Associate Clinical Social Worker, along with a written letter on employer letterhead signed by a supervisor or department director confirming weekly or monthly supervision requirements. Minimum Qualifications (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) Education: Master’s degree in Social Work from a CSWE‑accredited program or equivalent (as demonstrated by licensure). Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience. License/Certification: Valid LCSW license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Minimum Qualifications (Social Work Clinician) Education: Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE‑accredited program; must have completed the program prior to start date. If the MSW is not from a CSWE‑accredited program, must hold a certificate from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences verifying registration as an Associate Clinical Social Worker. Knowledge Ability to apply medical social work theories, principles, and practices in a hospital or medical center setting. Ability to assess patient and family needs using a data‑based approach. Ability to manage a caseload, recall case details, maintain confidentiality, and determine appropriate responses in emergencies. Ability to produce written case narratives and reports. Knowledge of effective assessment, interviewing, and counseling techniques. Knowledge of social work theories, principles, and techniques. Knowledge of hospital and medical center resources for patient care and client advocacy. Knowledge of child development and the impacts of injury and illness. Knowledge of family dynamics and the impacts of injury, illness, and loss. Knowledge and sensitivity to cultural considerations of the hospital’s patient population. Pay Range Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and internal equity. Typically, new team members begin in the minimum to mid salary range.
