School Nurse

The School Nurse along with the Health Services Coordinator helps students attain an optimum level of physical, social and emotional health. In order to coordinate a comprehensive student health program, the School Nurse must work closely with the District Nurse Coordinator, staff and administration of the district.

Job Purpose: To attain an optimum level of physical, social and emotional health.

Supervision: Health Services Coordinator & Building Principal

Required:

• 8 sick days per year
• 4 Personal Days
• 3 Days Bereavement leave per occurrence
• 176 work day calendar
• Bachelor's of Science in Nursing

Qualifications:

• Registered Nurse License
• Prior experience working with children preferred in a special needs school setting preferred, but not required
• Running, walking, sitting, standing

Physical Requirements & Conditions:

• Pushing and/or pulling; climbing and balancing, reaching forward and overhead, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling

Essential Job Functions:

• Conduct student health appraisals, including vision, and hearing screenings
• Consult with teachers and parents regarding the health of students
• Coordinate a program of communicable disease control based on Kansas immunization laws
• Provide faculty and staff with first-aid training and supplies
• Assist in providing emergency care for accidents and sudden illness of pupils until parents assume responsibility
• Notify parents and building administrators regarding children who are severely ill or injured
• Enforce and monitor medication guidelines
• Coordinate and supervise a comprehensive program of dental health education
• Encourage parents to provide their children with annual dental check-ups
• Request assistance for dentally indigent children
• Coordinate and supervise a comprehensive program of health education
• Assist in planning health curriculum and instructional materials
• Maintain a cumulative health folder for each student, recording all data pertinent to the child's health
• Submit accurate and timely reports as required by various health agencies
• Immediately report any safety hazards or unsanitary conditions observed in the school environment
• Adhere to all district and cooperative health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan
• Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Health Services Coordinator
