Staff Accountant

St. Philip's Church in Charleston, South Carolina seeks a Staff Accountant to steward and strengthen the financial health of a vibrant, historic, and growing parish. Founded in 1680, St. Philip's is the oldest congregation in the United States south of Virginia and is part of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina within the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). The Staff Accountant is a full-cycle accounting role reporting directly to the Director of Finance & Facilities. This position owns the Church's monthly close, financial reporting, and audit preparation, while also managing day-to-day accounts payable, accounts receivable, and donor giving. This combined role calls for an accountant who is equally comfortable leading a financial close and processing weekly transactions, and who wants ownership of the full financial cycle for a single, growing parish. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Own and execute monthly close procedures for the Church. Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and variance reports. Maintain general-ledger integrity, including journal entries and account reconciliations. Assist in the Church's conversion from modified cash to accrual accounting (effective January 1, 2027). Accounts Payable Process vendor invoices and check requests accurately and on time. Maintain vendor records and documentation, including W-9s and purchase orders. Research and resolve invoice discrepancies with department heads. Prepare and process weekly payment runs (checks, ACH, credit card). Maintain AP aging and communicate payment status to vendors. Process and record weekly contributions and online giving for the Church. Reconcile giving between Planning Center and the general ledger. Prepare and mail annual and quarterly giving statements for donor records. Maintain donor records and coordinate with the Director on pledge tracking. Manage billing and collections for the St. Philip's Preschool program. Compliance & Audit Support Maintain records in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP). Assist in the annual audit preparation. Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal reporting requirements. Systems & Processes Operate daily in Aplos. Document and maintain clear financial processes and procedures. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS An active and growing Christian faith lived out in a faithful worshiping community. Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. Working knowledge of nonprofit GAAP principles (including fund accounting), budgeting, and financial reporting standards. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data. Comfortable managing both high-level financial reporting and high-volume daily transactions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and donor giving. Proficiency with financial management and accounting software systems. Ability to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in a deadline-oriented setting.
