General Definition of Work This position is a working supervisor responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and cleaning of buildings to ensure a safe, clean, and functional learning environment. Building Supervisors train, motivate, supervise, evaluate subordinates, and manage their own tasks. They manage a team of custodians, assign tasks, ensure work meets APPA 2 cleanliness standards, perform routine cleaning, manage inventory, conduct inspections, and communicate with departments and occupants. Designated as “Essential Personnel,” the supervisor must report to the job site during emergencies (e.g., snow, inclement weather). Essential Functions Manage efficient operation of the facility, including opening/closing and troubleshooting emergencies. Coordinate work, schedules, and information with Daytime Custodial Lead or Building Manager. Assist Custodial Zone Manager with annual performance evaluations. Monitor floating custodians’ performance and provide feedback. Maintain Outlook knowledge and manage daily email correspondence. Inspect assigned areas for cleanliness and safety; manage feedback, corrections, and performance evaluations. Evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess safety concerns and enforce a culture of safety. Manage evening custodial staff schedules and building usage. Coordinate and assign routine and project work. Manage inventory of supplies, ensure acquisition, and coordinate deliveries. Manage preventative maintenance schedules. Train custodial staff on procedures, chemical and equipment usage, and safety. Track and manage schedule changes and updates for events. Complete daily custodial tasks. Respond to accidents or hazards such as spills, restroom problems, student illnesses. Operate power equipment (e.g., pressure washers, scrubbers, buffers, drills). Respond to teacher, administrator, and personnel requests. Perform other duties as assigned. Designated as Essential Personnel and may be on call 24/7 for emergencies. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must follow oral/written directions, work independently and in a team, have knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, equipment including heavy commercial equipment, customer service principles, occupational hazards, safety regulations, cooperative relationships with employees and the public, routine inquiry response, routine scheduling, supervisory abilities, communication skills, listening, basic math skills, logical reasoning, and decision-making. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent plus at least two years custodial experience and two years supervisory experience. Internal candidates must possess ACPS Custodial Certification; external candidates must obtain it within 18 months of hire. Special requirements: satisfactory health condition, negative drug screening, negative tuberculin test, valid driver’s license (depending on assignment), ability to read and follow instructions in English. Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Work typically walking or standing, lifting up to 10 lbs continuously, 10-25 lbs frequently, up to 75 lbs occasionally; occasional exposure to inclement weather, hazardous substances; communicates with internal and external parties. Evaluation Performance evaluated on ability and effectiveness in carrying out responsibilities.
