Job Title: 2nd Shift CNC Lathe Machinist
Job Description
This role focuses on setting up, operating, and editing programs on Haas 3-axis CNC lathes to machine components from plate or flat stock according to detailed blueprints and exact dimensions. You will produce precision parts for hot runner systems used in the plastic injection industry, working with a variety of materials such as steel, stainless steel, copper, nickel, aluminum, brass, and hardened steel. You will use G and M codes to adjust feeds and speeds, perform in-process quality checks with micrometers and calipers, and support both short-run production and one-off components in a dynamic, clean, and modern manufacturing environment on 2nd shift.

Work Environment
The role is based in a clean, climate-controlled machine shop built in 2019, featuring new Haas CNC mills and lathes with 3-axis capability and live tooling, and controls that use G and M codes on Haas and Fanuc-style interfaces. The facility supports machining of a wide range of materials, including stainless steel, aluminum, brass, steel, hardened steel, copper, and nickel, using processes such as turning, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, and milling flats and grooves. Measuring tools and equipment are provided on site. Employees have access to multiple cafes within the facility and an on-site workout room, contributing to a comfortable and convenient workday. The position primarily supports 2nd shift, typically running from 7:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., with extensions to 5:30 a.m. when business levels require, for approximately 48 hours per week and an additional shift premium. When needed, 2nd shift employees may work 6-hour Saturday shifts from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The operation may also run a 1st shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with potential extensions to 5:30 p.m. and occasional Saturday work from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and professionalism, with standard industrial attire appropriate for a CNC machining setting

Job Description

Responsibilities
- Set up and operate Haas 3-axis CNC lathes to machine parts from plate or flat stock according to blueprints and job travelers.
- Interpret and follow engineering drawings and blueprints to achieve exact dimensions, tolerances, and detailed part features.
- Edit G and M codes at the machine to optimize feeds, speeds, and tool paths for quality and efficiency.
- Use templates, macros, and parametric programming methods to create or modify CNC programs from prints when required.
- Perform tooling setup, including installing, offsetting, and changing cutting tools and inserts as needed.
- Measure and inspect each part using digital micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools to maintain dimensional conformance.
- Document and maintain quality standards by verifying part dimensions and surface finishes throughout the production run.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, such as cleaning, lubrication, and basic checks, to ensure reliable operation.
- Operate CNC lathes following production leader instructions and established work instructions.
- Support production on multiple machines as needed, contributing to both production runs and component work.
- Run small lot sizes, typically fewer than five pieces, requiring frequent setups and adjustments.
- Produce a variety of lathe operations such as turning, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, and milling flats and grooves.
- Work independently to plan setups, troubleshoot issues, and maintain productivity with minimal supervision.
- Collaborate with team members in the production and component areas to meet schedule, quality, and delivery requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards and safety procedures.
- At least 3 years of experience setting up and operating 2-axis CNC lathes.
- Strong understanding of G and M codes and their application to feeds, speeds, and tool paths.
- Hands-on experience operating Haas CNC lathes with 3-axis capability and live tooling.
- Ability to edit CNC programs at the control on Haas or Fanuc-based controllers.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
- Ability to read and use digital micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments accurately.
- Demonstrated skill in performing lathe operations such as turning, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, and milling flats and grooves.
- Strong setup skills for small lot sizes, including frequent changeovers and adjustments.
- Capacity to work effectively in a dynamic production environment with multiple machines running.
- Ability to work independently, make sound decisions at the machine, and follow instructions from production leadership.
- Basic mechanical aptitude to perform routine machine maintenance and troubleshoot minor issues.
- Comfort working with a range of materials including stainless steel, steel, hardened steel, aluminum, brass, copper, nickel, and similar alloys.
- Programming experience on CNC lathes, including creating programs from prints using templates, macros, or parametric techniques.
- Experience operating Haas mills with 3- or 4-axis capability and understanding of multi-axis machining concepts.
- Familiarity with Fanuc-style controllers and their use of G and M codes.
- in both production environments and one-off or prototype machining work.
- Experience performing in-process quality inspections and documenting results.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precision components.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate with supervisors, programmers, and fellow machinists.
- Willingness to work overtime, including extended shifts and occasional Saturdays, as production demands require.
