Engineering Support For Packaging

Responsible for providing engineering support for all packaging ideas at Kewaunee Scientific Corporation. The successful candidate will deploy problem solving skills to resolve packaging issues, reduce variability, and increase efficiency in all areas of packaging and shipping. This position will work closely with the Operations Leadership Team to execute the packaging/process strategy, including equipment selection and operator training, for their assigned areas. Primary responsibilities will focus on development of cost-effective packaging designs as well as driving continuous improvements. This will be done by utilizing Kaizen and lean manufacturing techniques to ensure key safety, quality, delivery, and cost goals are met.

Qualifications to perform this job successfully include the following:

Education and/or experience: Bachelor's degree (B. S.) in Mechanical Engineering (preferred) or Industrial Engineering and 5+ years of experience in a factory setting directly supporting manufacturing. Broad working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement techniques in relation to packaging and shipping operations. Should have a proven track record of experience in data analysis and problem solving to include the use of run charts, Pareto analysis, PFMEA, 5 Whys, 8D, and other problem-solving techniques.

Language skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information in oral and written form to top management, staff members, and line employees.

Reasoning ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Other qualifications: Applicants should be able to demonstrate hands on experience of utilizing data and proven problem-solving techniques to implement and sustain solutions that realize tangible improvements in safety, quality, and costs. Applicants must have prior working experience with formal quality management systems. Applicants must be well versed in Microsoft Office products and AutoCAD / SolidWorks and previous powder coating experience / exposure is desirable. Applicants should be results oriented, demonstrate strong initiative and be able work both independently and within team environments to serve as a change agent and promote a continuous improvement culture.

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk; sit; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist and/or turn. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and wet or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet with moderate noise in certain areas.
