Pediatric Hematologist Oncologist - Solid Tumor

Phoenix Children's

Job Description

Job Description

The Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant Division at our organization is looking for a full-time, board-certified or board-eligible pediatric hematologist/oncologist. This role will involve joining our dynamic and expanding division as an attending physician within the Solid Tumor Section.

The selected candidate will play a vital and collaborative role within our division and solid tumor section. Key responsibilities will encompass clinical care, educational activities, and involvement in clinical research. Although the primary focus for physicians in this section is on solid tumors, our team also manages patients with liquid tumors and benign blood disorders in both outpatient and inpatient environments.

Our physicians are responsible for supervising pediatric residents and fellows in various settings and actively engage in the clinical education of medical students and other learners. Additionally, our staff is involved in both clinical and laboratory research as well as educational initiatives.

Academic affiliations are established through the University of Arizona-College of Medicine Phoenix, Mayo Clinic Arizona, and Creighton University.

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at our organization ranks among the largest pediatric programs nationwide, treating over 400 new oncology patients annually, with approximately 50% being newly diagnosed with solid tumors.

We maintain active clinical and laboratory research programs focusing on oncology (including solid tumors and leukemia/lymphoma), neuro-oncology, survivorship, hematological disorders, and a robust phase I/phase II investigational drug development initiative.

Our center is a proud member of COG, POETIC, TACL, Histiocyte Society, and NACHO, providing access to consortium trials, phase I and II industry-sponsored studies, and investigator-initiated trials.

We offer an ACGME-approved fellowship program in pediatric hematology/oncology, accommodating three fellows per year, along with a one-year specialty fellowship in Bone Marrow Transplant.

Our center is recognized as a Center of Excellence, featuring two satellite locations, a team of board-certified attending physicians, fellows, advanced practice providers, and a dedicated support staff that includes social workers, nutritionists, child life specialists, psychologists, mental health therapists, clinical research associates, and research nurses.

Our organization is one of the largest standalone pediatric hospitals in the United States, with 457 licensed beds. We serve as a comprehensive tertiary and quaternary care center and are a primary pediatric teaching facility for medical students from the University of Arizona, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, and Creighton University.

We are an equal opportunity employer, offering a competitive salary and benefits package in an environment that fosters both personal and professional development.

The staff physician will deliver patient care services and uphold our mission of providing hope, healing, and exceptional healthcare for children and their families.

About Us:

Our organization is recognized as Arizona's leading children's hospital and serves as a regional hub throughout the Southwest. With 533 licensed beds and over 1,200 employed or affiliated physicians, we are on the verge of becoming one of the largest children's health systems in the nation. Phoenix consistently ranks among the best places to live in the United States, enjoying over 300 sunny days each year and easy access to both ocean and mountain attractions.

Join our team and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients, families, and the community where you work and live.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care Services:
    1) Deliver patient care services within the scope of clinical privileges, including but not limited to:
    a) Direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
    b) Provide subspecialty consultations and follow-up care.
    c) Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
    d) Offer urgent/emergent care services as needed.
    2) Aim for optimal patient and family-centered care.
    3) Contribute to the hospital's patient satisfaction objectives and division-specific targets.
    4) Adhere to divisional standards for patient safety and quality of care.
    5) Practice contemporary evidence-based medicine or the latest experience-based approaches.

  • Divisional Responsibilities:
    1) Set and strive to meet annual goals and objectives for physicians (individual, division, hospital).
    2) Support the medical education initiatives of the division, including:
    a) Direct supervision of trainees and allied health professionals in delivering inpatient and outpatient services.
    b) Conduct teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences for trainees.
    c) Participate in the education and supervision of trainees and allied health professionals assigned to the division.
    d) Engage in postgraduate continuing education activities for the division.
    3) Support the division's research initiatives, including those led by other members.
    4) Foster programmatic growth within the division.
    5) Assist with satellite efforts of the division when appropriate.

  • Professionalism:
    1) Treat colleagues, employees, and patients with respect, dignity, and courtesy.
    2) Promote a safe, collaborative, and professional healthcare environment.
    3) Uphold the organization's mission, vision, and values, including family-centered care, excellence in clinical practice, leadership, collaboration, and accountability.

  • Additional Activities:
    1) Support the Division Chief in serving as a liaison to the professional community and the public as needed.
    2) Conduct teaching rounds or conferences outside the organization, particularly if they enhance divisional clinical and educational programs.
    3) Represent the organization in the medical and business communities and to the public in a professional manner.
    4) Essential physical and mental skills for this role include:
    a) Effective communication via telephone, computer, or other devices.
    b) Ability to fulfill after-hours or night call responsibilities as required.
    c) Consistent attendance during scheduled work hours.

Application Process:
